John Hus and the Moravian Church

John Hus and the Moravian Church

About This Service Today’s worship service is based upon the Service of Word and Sacrament included in the Supplement to the Moravian Book of Worship Manual for Worship Planners. This service emphasizes the unity of Word and Sacrament, as a single, unified liturgy consisting of basic elements of worship. Because this liturgy grows out of a common Christian heritage, it has much in common with liturgies of other churches, past and present. The prayers in this service were largely drawn from the “Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom” of the Orthodox Church, translated by C. Daniel Crews. Several of the hymns merit special mention. Rejoice, O Czechs, and Every Land (page 4) is newly- written by C. Daniel Crews, based on the concepts found in an extremely long hymn which was printed in the 1615 Czech hymnal of the Unitas Fratrum and used for the commemoration of the martyrdom of John Hus. The tune dates to the 7th century and may have been used by the early Unitas Fratrum. O Living Bread, of Christ Our Head (page 12) was written by John Hus, translated by C. Daniel Crews, and set to a tune by Michael Weisse, editor of the 1531 German hymnal of the Unitas Fratrum. Lord Jesus Christ, Our Priest Most Kind was also written by Hus and translated by Daniel Crews, set to its tune in the 1615 hymnal. The choral introit is translated by C. Daniel Crews from the 1615 hymnal, where it was designated for use in commemoration of Hus’ martyrdom, and set to the same chant tune. I Am Jesus’ Little Lamb, sung by the children, is a translation of the same German original which is more widely known in its translation as Jesus Makes My Heart Rejoice. Youth musicians will present music prepared for this service at Senior High Camp last week. The vocal quartet was written by Stuart Townend and is sung by Ashley Brady, Roman Brady, Kathleen Sawtelle, Michael Sawtelle The offertory anthem, Lord Christ Jesus, Our Salvation, has its text by John Hus and translated by Dirk French; the tune originated in Hohenfurth (1410) and is arranged by Dirk French. Wounded Lamb! By Your Self-Offering is an anonymous Moravian hymn text set to the music better known as Ave Verum Corpus by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; this music and the German text are found together in Moravian manuscripts used in early America. Texts for the choral music in this service are printed on page 16. The monetary offering received today is designated for the Multicultural Fund administered by the Moravian Board of Cooperative Ministries, and will be used to support translation of Moravian resources into languages needed throughout the worldwide Moravian Church. The Moravian Church practices open communion, and all who normally partake of Communion in their home congregation are invited to partake. We will receive Communion by intinction, as the hymns are being sung. We will process down the center aisle and return to our seats via the side aisles. When you receive the bread, dip it in the juice and then partake. All of the bread used for the Holy Communion is gluten-free. You are cordially invited to a reception in the Fellowship Hall following the service. Virginia Tobiassen (Standing) - 1 - Blessed be God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, our Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer; And blessed be God's reign in all the universe! Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. (Sitting) CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION As we come together before God, the perfect and compassionate One, let us confess our sins in full assurance of faith and humbly ask for mercy. Let us pray. (Silent Confession) Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Hear what the Lord our Redeemer says: I will have mercy on you with a mercy that has no end, and I will not remember your sins. There is, therefore, now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (Standing) CANTICLE Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. - 2 - Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God, Redeemer and Sustainer, we offer you thanks and praise for the holy lives of all your servants — the prophets, apostles, and martyrs — who have shone forth as lights in the world and sacrificed their lives in testimony of their faith. We thank you for calling your servant John Hus to be an instrument of reformation and renewal in your church, and for keeping him faithful even unto a martyr’s death. Zachary Dease We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION In peace let us pray to the Lord: For the peace which comes from above, and for the salvation of our souls, For the peace of the whole world, and for the well-being of the holy church of God, For this house of worship, and for all who with faith and reverence come into it, For our bishops and other ministers and teachers, that they may rightly teach the word of truth, For the whole Christian church, and for all who serve within it for the work of reconciliation, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, hear our prayer. - 5 - For our native land, and for all nations and peoples, For all governments on earth, that they may strive for righteousness and peace, and conduct themselves for the glory of God, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, hear our prayer. For this community, for the whole land, and for all who live in it, For the careful stewardship of our natural resources, for the fruitfulness of the earth, and for peaceful times, For those who travel, For the poor, the homeless, the deprived, and the imprisoned, For the afflicted, the persecuted, and those who face great temptation, danger, violence, or need, For the sick and the dying, and for the salvation of all, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, hear our prayer. Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his name you will be in the midst of them.
