HALEY WICKENHEISER HOCKEY Hayley Wickenheiser, one of Canada’s greatest female hockey players, was born in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. She began playing hockey when she was 5 and played solely on boys’ teams until the age of 13. After her family moved to Calgary, she represented Alberta at the 1991 Canada Winter Games. That year, Alberta won the gold medal in the tournament. Hayley scored the winning goal in the final game and was voted the most valuable player. In 1994, at 15, Hayley was named to Canada’s national women’s team. She played in her first international tournament at the 1994 World Championship at Lake Placid, New York. Her assist in the final game helped Canada win a gold medal. In total, she and her team won six World Championship gold medals and a silver medal. As a Canadian Olympian, she and her team have won a silver medal and four gold medals. She is one of just five athletes in the world to win gold at four consecutive Winter Games. Hayley possessed such skill that she became the first woman to play in a men’s professional hockey league, joining teams in Finland and Sweden. In 2011, Hayley was named an Officer of the Order of Canada. In January 2017, she announced her retirement after 23 years on the Canadian women’s team and almost a dozen Olympic and world championship gold metals. Her dedication to women’s hockey and its acceptance world-wide has been an inspiration to all. A celebrated athlete, Hayley WIckenheiser is best known for helping lead the Canadian women’s hockey teams to repeated Olympic gold medals.
