Schengen is not only the greatest success of the story of European integration, but the purest symbol of a united Europe. Once this symbol is destroyed, the whole Weekly Update of Europe is at risk of Brussels, 8 January 2016 collapse. (...) European political leaders must now take this crucial issue in their own hands. The future of Europe is at stake. Events Happy New Year, comrades! 2016 has been a year of challenges, some of which we have yet to solve. We also have new initiatives ahead, which we are looking forward to sharing with you. The new year has started on a busy note for our President. He has just arrived from a visit to Cuba, where an S&D delegation met with the Cuban minister for external trade and foreign investments. The main topics discussed by Gianni Pittella were the common will to increase political, economic and cultural cooperation between Europe and Cuba, through rapid signature of the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement. More details on this will follow next week on our site. We are less than two weeks away from our first Relaunching Europe event in 2016! On the 21st of January we are going to be in Koblenz, Germany, debating Europe's Digital Market. Our MEPs Udo Bullmann, Marju Lauristin, Jutta Steinruck, Evelyne Gebhardt, Petra Kammerevert, Norbert Neuser and Josef Weidenholzer will join our President and other specialists and key speakers in a debate that is going to be focused on employment and social rights in the Digital Single Market, on the digital revolution and on digital education and training. You can find more details on the programme and speakers on our site. Tax justice is, once again, on the table, this upcoming week. Also, we are looking forward to a report on the Digital Single Market and for a Group meeting with trade unions.
