It highlights major activities and progress made under each component or strategic objective during the period under review. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Key progress/achievements during the reporting period include the following: Distribution of roughly 19,800 kg worth of dual-purpose and forage seeds to Producer Organizations (POs) in all project zones; Two additional shipments of cattle to the LAHAM slaughterhouse and the purchase of 5,602 animals (including cattle, goats, and sheep) for fattening. L4G held a Training of Trainers (ToT) event with ICRAF to cover topics related to agroforestry and improving livestock grazing land. Several important events were held, including the first Quarterly Learning Event with project clients, an LMIS Focus Group Meeting, and Barriers to Trade Roundtable event. 4 additional WLBPs and 1 additional YLBP were established in new project zones. TIMBUKTU EXPANSION This quarter, L4G’s subcontracting firm, AMRAD conducted a survey of animal ownership in April 2017 which revealed the disparate rates of animal ownership between three different intervention areas. Tables 1, 2 and 3 demonstrate that more than 90 percent of animals are located in Goundam, so future interventions will be primarily focused here. However, there are 3 villages in the Arham commune that produce rice and small ruminants, which are typically only sold to cover urgent family needs. Although livestock as a business is practiced in Ahman, L4G is primarily implementing forage production, animal health education, and nutrition and literacy activities within these communities. In this reporting period, AMRAD trained 775 people, including 262 women in FIGURE 1: ANIMAL FATTENING AT BOUREM SIDI AMAR IN DIRE CERCLE, TIMBUKTU, Goundam, Diré, et Niafounké cercles, .MAY 04, 2017 on fattening techniques, the creation of animal fattening schedules, specialized breeding practices to meet market demands, best practices in planting techniques, forage production and harvesting techniques, and literacy and numeracy.
