Be Yourself Hello, my name is David, after my FB New Years post I was asked to write a blog. I’m not much of a writer but I’ll try to explain a bit about what being a naturist means to me from the perspective of a person with a disability. Firstly, as a healthy teenager everyone thought I had great confidence but behind it all I was shy and had no body confidence at all. I had not been a fan of clothes and sometimes I used to go into the quieter part of the countryside and ditch the clothes to just spend time in nature alone because of my lack of confidence. I’m now in my late 40s, I received a spinal cord injury when I was 20 and since then I am a full-time wheelchair user. I’m sure when some people look at me they see a man in a wheelchair and automatically think that being in the wheelchair is the tough part. Being confined in a wheelchair where steps, stairs, sand and the likes are huge obstacles and do form major physical challenges but it’s the medical aspects that create the most difficulties, Read more Without clothing, you are who you are, they say. Is there a human “need” for being naked? Many naturists feel a significant urge to be naked whenever practical. It’s almost as though being naked is an emotional “need” that they have. We’re going to consider whether this can be a genuine need for some people. Let’s begin by discussing “needs” in general. There are different types of needs. Two of the most obvious types are physical needs and emotional needs. Physical needs include, for instance, water, food, and sleep. If a person is fully deprived of this type of need, that person will die before too long. Even in the case of sleep, prolonged deprivation will result in going crazy, before eventually dying. Emotional needs can have a similar urgency, though deprivation of them is usually not fatal. Such needs include affection, love, self-esteem, and a sense of worth and competence. Sex is mostly an emotional need, albeit a very ur- gent one for some people. Yet there are many other people who seem to be quite content without sexual gratification from another person. (Everyone else may find that astonishing.) There are still other types of needs – health needs, for instance. This category includes various things usually essential for optimal health, such as exercise, a few critical vitamins and minerals, and a balanced diet. Everything mentioned so far suggests that there are quite a few different things that may be consid- ered “needs” Read more 3 How to get a Naturist Volunteer Job Naturist vacations come with a cost. Even if you just want to go to a naturist campsite and bring your own tent, you’ll easily pay several tens of euros or dollars per night for a pitch. And then you haven’t had lunch and a beer yet. Especially if you want to travel for several weeks or months, the bite in your budget can be significant. Something we often forget is that there is another way of paying than hard cash: With time. We do this every day at our jobs. We exchange several hours of our time for a paycheck, which we then use to make whatever is left of our time a bit more fun. But there is a way to skip the paycheck system: It’s called volunteering. Since the early days, naturism has depended a lot on volunteering. Even to- day, lots of naturist associations and organizations only work with volunteers. This used to be the same for the clubs and resorts. By becoming a member, you also agreed to donate some of your time and skills to the resort. Yes, we were two, young Black folk headed to an area designated for nude sunbathing and surfing. And as we drew closer to the end of the half-mile we’d traveled to reach this destination, I couldn’t help but notice the stares. Go figure. Black’s Beach has no Blacks. Let’s face the truth: the average Black person isn’t going to readily strip down to a bare bottom and prance around a beach no matter how beautiful it is. But on that Hump Day, those middle-aged retirees and wave riders were go- ing to see my body in all of its thickness and glory. Amongst the seaweed and throngs of seagulls awaiting a chance to descend upon the sight of food, John and I found a cozy spot to smooth out and lay down our beach towels.
