Sciences E-mail: [email protected] Halmos College Arts and Sciences http://www.nova.edu/ocean/research/labs/figueiredo.html Nova Southeastern University http://marinelarvalecology.weebly.com/ RESEARCH The Marine Larval Ecology and Recruitment lab’s research integrates experimentation and mathematical modeling approaches to elucidate how the development dynamics of larvae and juveniles of marine invertebrates, particularly corals, determine important ecological processes, such as dispersal, connectivity, recruitment and recovery after disturbances, and to predict how and to what extent climate change and local anthropogenic stressors (e.g. sedimentation and turbidity) may alter these patterns. We are optimizing the selection of restoration sites and placement of protected areas, and methodologies to reproduce and rear sexually-produced coral recruits in land-based nurseries. Our research outputs are essential to conservation management as it assists in designing networks of protected areas, selecting optimal restoration sites, optimize coral culture in nurseries, and setting up regulation that intend to effectively maintain biodiversity, bolster productivity and minimize risks associated with climate change and local anthropogenic stressors.
