Coal Geology of Illinois Illinois The coalfields of Illinois, Indiana, and western Kentucky constitute the Eastern Region of the Interior Coal Province, known better as the Illinois Basin. About 36,800 square miles in Illinois are underlain by the coal-bearing sequence of rocks that constitute the Pennsylvanian System.
