Monitoring of shoaling problems of small fishery harbors in Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey Servet Karasu* and Barbaros Kocapir Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University, Rize, Turkey Shoaling of harbors and navigation channels is one of the major problems faced by some harbors in the world. This problem can sometimes become so important that it could be impossible for vessels to enter and obtain shelter in their basins and could result in a compulsory, urgent dredging operation. Some of the fishery harbors also suffer from shoaling in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. Rize province, located in north-eastern part of Turkey, has 80 km shoreline and 39 small fishery harbors. 17 of 39 fishery harbors need dredging according to data of Directorate General of Infrastructure Investments. In this study, two small fishery harbors were chosen and field studies were conducted to understand shoaling mechanism in this harbors. Three measurements were performed in each harbor site and totally six field studies were conducted at almost 6-month intervals. The bathymetric survey track followed shore-normal transects at 15 m longshore intervals, with simultaneous depth and position data collected. A 3.2 m long boat with acoustic depth sounder was used to survey up to 10 m depth contours. It is important to determine the source of sediment movement and take measurements for shoaling. The objective of this work is to determine which part of harbor is most vulnerable against the shoaling. With this aim, sand volumes were computed in the harbor basin and vicinity of harbors.
