The first and second parts of the collection include in manuscript and published form many of Evans’s articles, short stories, radio plays, poems, and novels, including Mist on the River and 0 Time in Your Flight. Parts one and two also contain many of Evans’s diaries, journals, notebooks, sketchbooks, and quotation collections which provide valuable insights into the author’s personality. His extensive business and personal correspondence includes letters to and from Margaret Laurence, Silver Donald Cameron, and Grace Maclnnis, as well as many readers and publishing houses. There is also information on a segment of Evans’s genealogy and a number of items relating to the awarding of his honourary degree from Simon Fraser University in 1984. The third part of the collection consists of the papers of Hubert Evans’s wife, Ann (Anna) Winter Evans. While there is only a small amount of personal and business correspondence in this part of the collection, there are a large number of typescripts and publications of Ann Evans’s numerous stories and articles. Also included are a number of photographs, clippings, and a wealth of notes which shed light upon the composition of her works. The fourth and final part of the collection consists of audio and video recordings of interviews, poetry, stories, and novels used by Hubert Evans when his eyesight began to fail and he could no longer write with pen and paper. Linear metres of shelf space: Part I: Ca. 1 m. Part II: Ca. 1 m. Part III: Ca. .5 m. Literary rights remain with the Evans family. The collection was donated by the family ofHubert Evans in August 1986. —111— BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Hubert Reginald Evans, called “the elder of our tribe” by Margaret Laurence, was a writer and poet as well as a newspaper reporter and salmon hatchery superintendent. Born in Ontario in 1892, Evans moved to British Columbia permanently after World War I. He married Ann (Anna) Emily Winter in 1920, and in 1926, Evans decided to try freelance writing as a full time occupation. After a couple of “lean years,” as Evans says in his autobiographical note, he and his wife were able to support themselves and their three children. From the 1930s through the 1950s, Evans published many adventure and wilderness stories for young readers. He expanded his readership in 1954 with the publication of Mist on the River, now considered a Canadian “classic.” Canadian audiences were also able to listen to his radio plays and adaptations of his stories which were produced by the CBC. Evans’s other major work was completed in 1979 with the publication of 0 Time in Your Flight, which met with great acclaim. He also produced three volumes of poetry during the late 1970s and early 1980s, dictating many of the poems onto cassette tapes and having them transcribed because of his failing eyesight. He was the recipient of an honourary doctorate from Simon Fraser University in 1984, and in 1986, died at the age of 93. —iv— PART I Box No.! Series: Item Description Ch.
