General Characteristics of the District: Ukhrul District was first marked out as a Sub-Division in 1919 by the then British-India. Later it was upgraded to a District in the year 1969 by the Govt. of India. The land of the colorfulTangkhuls was marked out first a Sub-Division in 1919 during the British Raj. Then in November 1969 it was upgraded to a full-fledged district, bearing the nomenclature of Manipur East District. 1.1.1 Location & Geographical Area: . It is situated the north- eastern part of Manipur. Ukhrul become a district in the year covering an area of 4,544 sq. Km. which is about 26% of the state with an average altitude being 2,020 metres (MSL) above sea level, the district is hilly and is extremely cold most of the year. It lies between 94o0’E to 94o45’E longitude and between 24o15’N to 24o45’N latitude. It is bounded by Myanmar(Burma) in the East Senapati district in the west. Nagaland in the north and Tengnoupal of chandel in South. 1.1.2 Topography: The district is enclosed with beautiful landscape of blue hills, green valleys, serpentine streams and rivers flowing through mountains. It is best introduced by its rare and beautiful Shiroi Lily grown only on the Peak of ShiroiKashong. It has five (Five) Rivers flowing through the mountains and deep gorges. It is also a hot spot of biodiversity with rich flora and fauna. The climatic condition of the district is cool in most part of the year. The average maximum temperature recorded is 34oc and the minimum temperature recorded is 0o. The average annual rainfall is 134 cm. There are a number of small rivers and streams i Most of the major rivers originate from the crevices and slopes of this Shirui Peak. The terrain of the district is rippled with small ranges and striped by few rivers .Ukhrul district. Some of the important rivers are Thoubal, Iril, Maklang, Onadong etc. 1.3.1 Availability of Minerals: The district is rich in minerals compared to other district in the state. As such, one state owned cement industry was set up, run and managed by the state Govt. but is defunct at present.
