This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu MEMORANDUM June 17, 1994 To: Senator Dole From: Paul Curcio Re: New York Briefing The Senate Race Political newcomer Bernadette Castro was recently chosen at the state GOP convention with nearly 90 % of the delegates over fonner Ambassador to France, Evan Galbraith. She is considered a rising star in the state and offers a strong contrast to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. She has a great deal of personal resources and has the advantage of a united state GOP. The gubernatorial ticket also includes a woman while there is not a woman at the top of the Democrats' slate. With Governor Mario Cuomo's numbers vecy weak, Moynihan will have the problem of having to distance himself from both the state and national Democrats. The Rev. Al Sharpton is attempting to challenge Sen. Moynihan in the Democrat primary on September 13 by petitioning to get on the ballot. In order to accomplish that goal, he must collect 15, 000 valid signatures on nominating petitions during a five- we.ek period this summer.
