Governor McCrory has made tough decisions to confront the serious problems that face North Carolina. He signed historic tax reform into law that put more money into the paychecks of North Carolinians by reducing personal and corporate tax rates. The governor also reformed North Carolina’s outdated unemployment insurance system and streamlined the state’s workforce development programs to provide higher skilled workers in less time. These, and other decisions, have fueled the Carolina Comeback. When Governor McCrory took office, North Carolina had the fifth-highest unemployment rate in the nation. Today, it’s the 23rd lowest thanks to the nearly 200,000 new jobs created by North Carolina’s innovative private sector. Economic growth has spread across every sector…except one, state government. Today, state government is doing more work than ever before with 6,000 less people than it had in January 2013. This dramatic increase in efficiency is a result of state employees continually reassessing their duties and priorities with the goal of better serving and putting North Carolina’s citizens and employers first. The governor’s emphasis on customer service has meant reduced wait times in the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles offices, as well as extended hours at selected locations. Striving for efficient government, he established the Innovation Center to test, streamline and “try before you buy” information technology systems for state government. This new concept has saved North Carolina taxpayers at least $6 million, and the “iCenter” has become a national model for other states trying to deliver services more efficiently. The governor enacted bipartisan transportation reform that will now fund projects based on need, safety and economic development. Focused on improving North Carolina’s education, the governor created a Teacher Advisory Committee for input on issues like compensation and over-testing. The Center for Safer Schools was established to protect North Carolina’s students, and vocational training legislation was signed to give students greater educational pathways. Governor McCrory’s focus on service reflects his lifelong dedication to improving the lives of others, a fact that was evident to the people of Charlotte who elected him mayor for a record seven terms. Governor McCrory has been married to his wife Ann for 26 years and the couple has a Labrador retriever mix named Moe.
