I greet you all reading this wonderfully compiled book and all individuals that are directly involved with the business of SMSA, be it in their capacity as partners, clients, spectators, employees or service providers. Please do enjoy some of your decoded comments that I have the pleasure of also passing on to our staff. SMSA has planned, managed and delivered more than 105 events in 2017 with over 800 000 spectators in attendance, with these including highly successful sporting, musical and religious activities at facilities under our management. You will agree that this is a monumental achievement! You will also concur that in the year, SMSA has leapt on to the global stage and grown to be a universally recognised entity with a host of international accomplishments to match. In this period, we were honoured with the Business Initiative Directions Corporate Award (Gold Category) for Excellency, while the Europe Business Assembly presented us with the Manager and the Business Enterprise of the Year accolades as well as the Europe Business Trading License – both in the United Kingdom. There has been further SMSA overseas invites with respective trips to Germany and the United States to collect the International Arch of Europe as well as The Bizz Awards, as further recognition for company quality and excellence. It doesn’t end there. At the time of writing, the premier South African football competition, the 2016 Carling Black Label Champion Cup played at the magnificent FNB Stadium, had received a nomination in the Fan Experience of the Year category in the 2017 Stadium Business Awards that will be staged in Ireland. More than anything, this is just rewards to each of the 47 staff members in the SMSA Team because their hard work, dedication and passion has not gone unnoticed. It also gratitude to the City of Johannesburg and in particular, Dudu Maseko and MMC for Community Development, Nonhlanhla Sifumba, for their continuous motivation and exceptional support during the year. To South African football giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, and to Jessica Motaung and Darryl Joselowsky – our friendship remains unscathed. We are proud to associate ourselves with your brands and ever-enthusiastic personnel. Remain the great, humble sporting servants that you are. Winner 2017 International Arch of Europe (IAE) Award This award will be presented at the annual International Arch of Europe Convention in Frankfurt, Germany, on 30 June and 1 July, 2017. SMSA will receive the 2017 IAE Award in the platinum category, with the company internationally recognised as a driving force for quality and excellence. ii. Winner 2017 The Bizz Award for Business Excellence SMSA is awarded The Bizz Award for quality and excellence where one of the criteria was contributing to the daily growth of local and the world economy. The World Confederation of Businesses Economy (WORLDCOB) recognises the growth of leading international business and businesspeople. This award will be held on 26 and 27 July 2017. iii. Nominee Stadium Business Awards 2017 Fan Experience of the Year Award The 2016 Carling Black Label Champion Cup at FNB Stadium is shortlisted for the fan experience of the year award alongside other nominees that include British football fan experiences at Liverpool and Glasgow Celtic (Great Britain) and basketball franchises, Sacramento Kings and Utah Jazz (United States). The Stadium Business Awards recognise leadership, innovation & achievement in the delivery, operation and management of sports facilities globally. The gala function takes place in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, on 22 June 2017. iv. Champion South African of the Week (Radio SAFM) As recognition for the Manager of the Year international accolade, SMSA CEO Jacques Grobbelaar, was acknowledged as a Champion South African by the leading SABC national radio station, SAFM, and their prestigious honours in recognising top performing South Africans around the world. v. Winner 2017 Impumelelo Top Empowerment Award for Transformation For the second time SMSA was awarded the top empowerment leaders of business and industry in South Africa recognising SMSA’s commitment to transformation. This award is endorsed by the South African Trade and Industry Government where some of the key indicators are empowerment, skills development, job creation and performance. ix. Winner 2016 Peace Ambassador Award from the Universal Peace Federation Revelation (Mr. Jacques Grobbelaar) SMSA CEO, Jacques Grobbelaar, was recognised for excellent leadership and the company’s contribution to surrounding communities by an international and interreligious network of individuals and organisations. The Universal Peace Federation (UPF) committee includes representatives from religion, government, civil society and the private sector, and is dedicated towards achieving community prosperity and world peace. x. Winner 2017 Europe Business Assembly Europe Trading License Award SMSA was awarded the business license to trade in Europe by the Europe Business Assembly and the Socrates Nomination Committee. xii. 2015 Highest Concert Ticket Selling Worldwide Certificate from POLLSTAR – Top 5 ticket sales in the world SMSA was a top five music concert selling business in the world by the United Kingdom-based POLLSTAR. xiii. Third Highest Concert Ticket Selling Worldwide Certificate from POLLSTAR SMSA was a top three music concert selling business in the world by the United Kingdom-based POLLSTAR. xiv. Finalist 2013 Stadium Business Awards Executive of the Year (CEO Jacques Grobbelaar) SMSA CEO, Jacques Grobbelaar, was shortlisted in the Manager of the Year category with the leading Stadium Business Awards, which recognises leadership, innovation & achievement in the delivery, operation and management of sports facilities globally. xv. Winner 2011 Stadium Business Award FNB Stadium was awarded the Sports Event of the Year award with the leading Stadium Business Awards and the gala function held in Barcelona, Spain, for the 2010 Fifa World Cup final that featured Spain and the Netherlands. It was watched by a global audience exceeding a billion viewers. xvi. Winner 2010 SAPOA Award for Innovative Excellence in Property Development Construction World Awards The SMSA –managed FNB Stadium (noted the world over for its unique Calabash-styled design and among the leading facilities in the world) was recognised for being a project that has contributed to the highest standards in property development in Southern Africa. This was after successfully staging the 2010 FIFA World Cup and a number of sold-out Soweto Derby fixtures featuring South African football giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. xvii. Winner 2009 SAICE Award FNB Stadium was the overall winner of the Southern African Institute of Civil Engineers (SAICE) awards Steel Construction Steel Awards for the geotechnical work done at the stadium. xviii.
