Physical Education Goals and Procedures

PHYSICAL EDUCATION GOALS AND PROCEDURES DEAR PARENT/GUARDIAN, Participation in physical education class is very important, as a fit and healthy body is as essential in today’s world. We have a positive physical education program at LVMS and offer a wide variety of activities. In order for your child to have a successful school year, it is important that he/she consistently attend school and put forth a good effort each day. Please review the following information with your child. If you have any questions or comments, please call 469-713-5974 and ask to speak with your child’s PE teacher. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES 1) To enjoy physical activity regardless of skill level. 2) To learn about and appreciate the benefits of life-long health and fitness. 3) To develop cardiovascular and muscular proficiency. 4) To learn the basic skills and rules of various sports and activities. 5) To practice respectful behavior in the learning environment. DRESS AND ACCESSORIES 1) Parents can buy Lakeview PE workout clothes at www.teamddesigns.com They sell dry fit shirts and shorts with the LV logo. You can also buy Lakeview sweats. The shirt and shorts can be used when your son or daughter enter 7th grade athletics. 2) If you choose not to buy Lakeview clothes students will bring their own PE clothes to participate. The student can have black shorts with a white, gray or black shirt. The shirt should have nothing on it. The only exception is if it has Lakeview on the shirt. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with their uniform. Students may take their uniform home to wash but they are expected to have it back the next day. (Would be good to take home on Friday and bring back Monday). If you do not have your uniform or you are wearing clothes that don’t fall under these rules we will provide you one for that day. 3) Students must wear socks and athletic shoes that do not leave black scuff marks on the floor. Shoes must be laced at all times. 4) Students are required to dress out for PE everyday. 5) NO JEWELRY is to be worn in class. Students should lock up valuables in their assigned lockers. 6) The PE department provides each student with a locker and combination lock to keep their belongings secure. THE COMBINATION SHOULD NEVER BE GIVEN TO ANYONE. Students are not to share lockers. STUDENTS ARE ALSO NOT ALLOWED TO BRING OWN LOCK. 7) Students may keep deodorant, shampoo, soap, jewelry container and a towel in their lockers. No glass or aerosol containers. Showers are available but optional. 8) Socks, towels, etc. should be taken home and laundered once a week. SWEAT SHIRTS AND PANTS While not required, students may wish to consider bringing from home sweat pants and/or sweat shirts when the weather turns cooler. The following are the guidelines that will be used to integrate these into our PE uniform system. Sweat Pants Sweat pants must be black. They are to have no writing, stripes, buttons, or snaps on them. The sweat pants may not have lettering on them although a small product label (Nike swoosh, Russell Athletic symbol, etc.) is permissible. Sweat Shirts Sweat shirts must be black. They are to have no lettering, numbers, or pictures. They may have a small product tag or emblem. The sweat shirt may not have sleeve stripes or collar stripes. Sweat shirts may have a hood, zipper, or snaps. Suggestions for purchase Many outlets will carry these products including Wal-Mart, Target and Dollar General. When can sweats be worn? • In the cooler months of November through February sweats may be worn either in the gym or in outdoor activities. • Sweats may be worn anytime of the year a class goes outside for activity. Students will be informed before they dress out if their class is scheduled to be outside. Sweats need to have the student’s name written in them and should be laundered weekly. EXCUSES FROM PARTICIPATION………..DOCTOR’S NOTES Students are required to dress out and participate in PE each day they are in school. Students with health issues will be excused from only those activities which would aggravate these problems. A DOCTOR’S NOTE defining a student’s exact limitations should be submitted to the PE teacher and the school nurse. A parent note will excuse the student for up to three days and then a doctor’s note is required if the student is still unable to participate in activities. Emergency health problems (head-ache, twisted ankle, etc.) will be assessed on an individual basis. GRADING PROCEDURES Sixty percent (60%) of your child’s grade will be based on daily participation and positive contributions to class including • getting to class and roll call on time • dressing out in the appropriate uniform • following rules • attempting all activities • demonstrating cooperation and respect toward teachers and other students Forty percent (40%) will be based on a combination of skill, knowledge and fitness tests. These tests will include but are not limited to a mile run and written test each six weeks. GENERAL PHYSICAL EDUCATION RULES DO NOT • chew gum • bring food or drink (plastic water bottles are allowed) • go back to the locker room once roll call begins • hang on basketball rims or volleyball poles/netting • touch any equipment without permission • wear jewelry of any kind DO • enter and exit through the hallway leading to the boys and girls locker rooms • follow directions EXACTLY at all times • lock up your belongings • come ready to participate • have fun and enjoy the benefits you can receive through activity LOCKER ROOM RULES DO NOT • run, yell, or “horseplay” • bring food, drink, gum or candy • bring glass or aerosol containers • spray any substances toward another student • write on lockers, mirrors, walls, etc. • enter locker room – unless dressing before or after PE class CONSEQUENCES Consequences for not following any of the above rules will result in points deducted from daily participation grade and may also involve running extra laps, sit-ups, push-ups, detentions or office referrals. Students who choose to not dress out for class will receive a “0” for their daily grade and will not participate in that day’s activity.
