Why have Ryman decided to get involved in cricket? Ryman have sponsored the Ryman Football League – the old Isthmian League – for 100,000 years now I think! That has been really successful and I stand to be corrected but I think this has been one of the longest sponsorships in UK Sport. We’ve been very supportive of that League and have done well from it and it’s a natural progression to move into cricket – especially in Surrey and areas of South London which are very much part of our core base geographically. What do Ryman gain from sponsoring the Championship? Well brand awareness is the one that immediately comes to mind but business to business custom is important for us as well. It’s not just a question of us giving money for the sake of it – we expect a little business back! Are the clubs that play in the Surrey Championship a good demographic for you? Absolutely. They’re not a million miles from football clubs in the Ryman League. It’s not just the point of brand awareness though, as I said, they really help drive business to our local shops. How much cricket do you get to see? Sadly I actually get to see very little these days. I do like the game – particularly limited overs. I used to be a great Test Match fan when I was a kid because that’s what my brother and I used to spend our summers doing - fishing and listening to cricket on the radio! Theo was Chairman of Millwall FC for eight years, taking the club out of administration, into the Championship (to the FA Cup Final opposite Manchester United) and into Europe. He’s revived the fortunes of such notable retail brands as La Senza, Contessa Lingerie, Ryman, Partners the Stationers and Stationery Box. He sold his interest in the La Senza UK and Contessa in 2006. In 2008, he combined the stationery businesses to form a new chain, Ryman the Stationer where he is now Chairman. The company sponsors the Isthmian football league, called the Ryman Football League, and our own Surrey Championship. He also owns Red Letter Days with fellow Dragon, Peter Jones, which he salvaged out of administration, and is an investor in Smarta, the business support and advice network for small business owners and entrepreneurs. Theo launched the highly innovative new lingerie and nightwear brand, Boux Avenue in spring 2011. There are 17 UK stores, three international ones and an interactive website (www.bouxavenue.com). The company continues to expand rapidly. In July 2012, the 96-store homewares specialist chain, Robert Dyas joined Theo's retail portfolio.
