ACC-Players-of-the-Year Eight ACC Tournament MVPs 10 (The University of North Carolina is an Equal AU-ACC Players 24 players honored 43 times Opportunity Institution) With four starters, including a pair of first-team All-Americas, returning from a year ago, North Carolina should again be one of the premier teams in college basketball in 1984. The Tar Heels posted a 28-8 record against an extremely difficult schedule last season, tied for first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season race and reached the Final Eight of the NCAA Tournament for an amazing third straight year. Heading the cast of returning players off that team are two brilliant All-Americas, forward Sam Perkins and guard Michael Jordan. Each could be the best player in the nation at his position. Also back is forward Matt Doherty, perhaps the most under-rated player in the entire ACC. Seven other lettermen also return, including Brad Daugherty who started at center most of the season. Despite these returnees, the Tar Heels face some major challenges if they are to come close to duplicating the success of recent Carolina teams. In the last three years Carolina has had records of 29-8, 32-2 and 28-8. The Tar Heels were the NCAA champions in 1982, national runners-up to Indiana in 1981 and a regional finalist in 1983. "It will be difficult to have the same type of record this year that we've had in the past three," says Coach Dean Smith. "A break here or there has helped us win so many close games in the last three seasons and I'm expecting most of our games to go down to the wire again. "I do think we will have a very good basketball team. In Sam Perkins, Matt Doherty and Michael Jordan we have three men with a great deal of experience and ability. They should form the nucleus of our squad. "Certainly, we will miss Jim Braddock, who did a fine job at the point guard position for us last year. But, we will pretty much be the same team that we were last season." The problem is that while Carolina will have most of its players from last year back, so will several other teams in the ACC. "I think our league will be stronger than it was last year when we had three teams in the NCAA's Final Eight," says Smith. "We really won't have a weak team in the conference." Carolina won't see many weak teams outside the league, either. Nine of the Tar Heels' 13 non-conference games will be played against teams which were in post-season tournaments last year.
