Towards the end of the year the printing of the Codsall Register was completed and was distributed to members at Christmas. Requests have been received for the printing of the parish register of Audley but an examination of the transcript in the Society’s collections which runs from 1538 to 1713 reveals many alterations and corrections in the M.S. which will need a complete copy to be made before the printer can start work. This the Hon. Secretary hopes to do very shortly. During the year the Hon. Secretary was able to purchase for £20 the whole of the large stock of secondhand printed parish registers of Staffordshire held by Messrs. H. Start & Son of Wolver hampton who have now closed down. These volumes will be very useful to implement our stock of back volumes which are now getting very low. In the case of twelve of the parishes the printed volumes are either partly or wholly out of print. Our sales of these volumes continues and althoughSample at the momentCounty they are not on the scale we experienced last year the proceeds from this side of our activities still provides us with a useful source of additional income. I am glad to report a slight increase in the membership of the Society during the last year but if we are to improve on our present output of printing we shall have to very greatly increase our membership. Studies Hon. Secretary’s Report for 1964 Although there is little to report for the year 1964 the work of the Society has continued and, unlike many other societies with similar aims, we are continuing the work of printing the parish registers of Staffordshire in spite of the rising cost of printing which continues to cause us financial anxiety. We are at present concentrating on the registers of small parishes particularly where they are imperfect and with the kind co-operation and help of the Diocesan Registrar, Mr. M. S. B. Exham, we are using the Bishop’s Transcripts to fill in the gaps. 5 This is particularly the case at Chebsey, the register now in the course of printing. Owing to the theft some years ago of the church safe a section of the parish registers is now missing but we have fortunately been able to fill in most of the gaps from the Transcripts. I am pleased to report that the funds of the Society continue to be swelled from the sale of surplus secondhand copies of printed Staffordshirevolumes. The amount obtained in this way for 1964 was £33-7-4 and during the current year the demand is still continuing in spite of the gradual shrinkage in our stock which has inevitably resulted. Membership of the Society continues to rise slightly and we are getting more and more institutional members including many American Libraries and Societies. Whilst on holiday in Salt Lake City last year I was able to address several gatherings on genealogical sources in England including the staff of the Genealogical Society Library in Salt Lake City thereby helping to spread the interest in our work in the United States.
