Exchange Studies Department of Political Science (S STOCKHO01) 2018/2019 Department of Political Science Welcome to the Department of Political Science! Political conversations take place everywhere – in the UN, in the national parliaments, at our dinner tables, in the media. Whether it is about current politics or eternal philo- sophical dilemmas, issues concerning the governance of society and how our commu- nity should be organised are always of immediate interest and importance. Political science focuses on these problems. The Department of Political Sciences’ aim is to work for fresh ideas, an environment of high toler- ance, but without foregoing established scientific requirements such as clear argumentation, trans- parency, systematics and an awareness of problems of interpretation. The Department’s researchers are highly qualified both nationally and internationally. The research at the Department embraces a wide range of different areas: democracy and citizen- ship, political theory, environmental politics, political institutions, European politics, minority rights, global development, women in politics, and many others. Several of the areas have been selected as leading research areas at Stockholm University. 1. Studying Political Science at Stockholm University Undergraduate Studies (1st level) Undergraduate studies at the Department of Political Science consist of three levels to be taken in sequence: Political Science I (PS I), Political Science II (PS II) and Political Science III (PS III). Each level comprises 30 credits, which correspond to one semester of full-time studies. Each level is divid- ed into course parts of 7.5 credits per part (the core courses/kernfächer/corsi base); four course parts for PS I and PS II and three course parts for PS III, including a 15-credits “Independent Research Pro- ject” (thesis). Further information. 4. Political Science I Political Science I provides a broad introduction to political science – an overview of central political concepts, ideas and ideologies; knowledge of important institutions and processes in Swedish politics and public administration; the relations and contexts of political phenomena through comparative studies of different political systems; fundamental knowledge of international politics. The student learns to independently collect and critically analyse information about politics and to argue by means of oral and written assignments. Further information. Political Science II Political Science II provides a broader and deeper knowledge of certain aspects of the subjects stud- ied within Political Science I, such as political science perspectives and approaches, methods and techniques and critical analysis of political phenomena. It also provides the opportunity for an inde- pendent research project. Further information. Political Science III Political Science III provides a deeper knowledge of some areas within political science; various polit- ical science perspectives; knowledge of political science research problems and methods. In addition, there are a number of special courses entailing specialisation and a relevant point of departure for the independent research work (thesis). Within the framework of a political science investigation, scientific methods and theories should be applied in order to elucidate empirical/theoretical problems within the field. Further information. On PS II and PS III you may choose a sub-discipline, either in your choice of optional course or in your choice of essay work. Your choice in this respect may reflect either a focus on some central themes in political science or a broadening of your perspective within the discipline of political sci- ence. If you choose political science as the main subject in a Degree of Bachelor, you normally take 90 credits of political science as well as other subjects of your own choosing up to 180 credits. If you want to continue studying political science after a Degree of Bachelor, you may do so in our Master’s or Ph.D. Programmes in Political Science. NOTE: As an exchange student, you can choose to take either an entire course (Political Science I, II or III) or individual course parts (e.g. International Politics). Master Studies (2nd level) The Department of Political Science offers two different Master’s programmes in english, comprising 120 credits, i.e. two years of full-time studies.
