
5 Integration 5.1 Antiderivatives and Indefinite Integration Suppose that f(x) = 5x4. Can we find a function F (x) whose derivative is f(x)? Definition. A function F is an antiderivative of f on an interval I if F !(x)=f(x) for all x in I. 5 5 5 Note. Observe that F1(x)=x , F2(x)=x + 2, and F3(x)=x √7 are all antiderivatives of f. To represent all possible antiderivatives of f(x), we write F (x)=−x5 + C where C is a constant. Theorem 5.1. If F is an antiderivative of f on an interval I, then G is an antiderivative of f on the interval I if and only if G is of the form G(x)=F (x)+C, for all x in I where C is a constant. Note. We call C the constant of integration and G the general antiderivative of f. Notation. From the last section, for dy = f(x) dx we wrote dy = f(x)dx The process of finding all solutions to this equation is called indefinite integration or antidif- ferentiation.
