GALLANTRY AWARDS OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE PAGE 58: “On 11 December 1954 a motor vehicle attempted to cross the bridge over the flooded Katbosspruit, near Standerton. The motor vehicle, which had been washed off the bridge by flood waters, contained a family of nine, consisting of a father and mother and seven children aged between two months and sixteen years. A number of onlookers were witness to this event, and could only watch helplessly as the vehicle was washed into the fast-flowing river. The vehicle had already disappeared below the surface of the river, when the above two members of the force, who were travelling on holiday, arrived on the scene. Without hesitation they both immediately responded to the call for help. Divesting themselves of their heaviest articles of clothing, they immediately braved the flooded river and went to the aid of the family. D/Hd/Constable Visser succeeded in reaching and bringing to safety the sixteen-year old boy and the two-month-old baby, while Sergeant van der Poel succeeded in rescuing the unconscious mother. The two policemen then repeatedly braved the flooded river and dived below the surface a number of times in search of two more of the children. After numerous attempts D/Hd/Constable Visser, aided by Sergeant van der Poel, succeeded in entering the submerged vehicle through a window, and brought out the bodies of a thirteen-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy. The policemen were in the ice-cold river for over half an hour. Through their unselfishness and without regard for their own safety, these men placed their own lives in danger in order to save the lives of others. As a result, three lives were saved and two bodies were immediately recovered. For their exceptional bravery Detective Head Constable Jan Daniel Visser and Sergeant Michael Johannes van der Poel were awarded the Queen’s Police Medal for gallantry. (F/O 24/1956) Detective Head Constable Visser was also awarded a bronze medal and certificate from the Royal Human Society (RHS register number 61319) There are a large quantity of photocopies from his file.
