Programme Description 1.1 Introduction UCC using RCDF in partnership with Ministry of Education and Sports is implementing a programme for ICT integration in Uganda. The programme has made significant impact in the education sector including computer studies being declared compulsory subject in uganda thus being the only country in africa with such a policy. Its holistic nature and sustainability has attracted many other to benchmark with Uganda. The main component of the programme and their respective number completed are as shown below; No. Project component Number 1 ICT laboratories i. Governement secondary schools 1,027 ii. Tertiary institutions including all National Teachers’ 43 College iii. Universities 9 iv. Health training institutions 7 2 Internet connectivity for each laboratory 816 3 ICT teachers retooled for each laboratory 930 4 Virtual science content installed for each laboratory 634 5 Community ICT training using the laboratories (persons) 62,000 2 Soldiers UPDF at the University of Military Science and Technology (UMST), is a tertiary institution of higher learning, that instructs qualified military officers and technicians in various fields of engineering and science established by UCC 1.4 Criteria for selection of the secondary schools Geographical distribution of schools taking into account all the districts of Uganda. The programme is run during school vacations with contributions from the following stakeholders; Schools contribute the environment, the ICT laboratory and the teachers UCC provides logistical support, meals and technical guidance Local leaders such area Members of Parliament provide the required mobilization for the trainees The main objective of this training programme is to enable the trainees to become people who can: Work for ICT facilities Operate ICT facilities as and or business venture 4 Hon. Ronald Kibuule, Minister of State for Youths awarding certificates to community members around Bunya S.S, Mayuge district as the Chief. The Minister was accompanied by Mr. Bob Lyazi, Director – RCDF (in glasses), Hon. Vincent Bagiire (holding the microphone) and school administrators. Direct impact a) A critical number of schools with ICT laboratories 1,027 out of 1,150 which makes it possible to run sector wide programme and to implement education sector wide policies such as compulsory ICT subsidiary at A’ level. b) A basis for the Ministry of Education and Sports to consider and implement more advanced applications of ICT in the teaching and learning activities such as virtual science laboratories.
