A supplementary finding-aid to the archives relating to Maori Schools held in the Auckland Regional Office of Archives New Zealand MAORI SCHOOL RECORDS, 1879-1969 Archives New Zealand Auckland holds records relating to approximately 449 Maori Schools, which were transferred by the Department of Education. These schools cover the whole of New Zealand. In 1969 the Maori Schools were integrated into the State System. Since then some of the former Maori schools have transferred their records to Archives New Zealand Auckland. Building and Site Files (series 1001) For most schools we hold a Building and Site file. These usually give information on: • the acquisition of land, specifications for the school or teacher’s residence, sometimes a plan. • letters and petitions to the Education Department requesting a school, providing lists of families’ names and ages of children in the local community who would attend a school. (Sometimes the school was never built, or it was some years before the Department agreed to the establishment of a school in the area). The files may also contain other information such as: • initial Inspector’s reports on the pupils and the teacher, and standard of buildings and grounds; • correspondence from the teachers, Education Department and members of the school committee or community; • pre-1920 lists of students’ names may be included. There are no Building and Site files for Church/private Maori schools as those organisations usually erected, paid for and maintained the buildings themselves. Admission Registers (series 1004) provide details such as: - Name of pupil - Date enrolled - Date of birth - Name of parent or guardian - Address - Previous school attended - Years/classes attended - Last date of attendance - Next school or destination Attendance Returns (series 1001 and 1006) provide: - Name of pupil - Age in years and months - Sometimes number of days attended at time of Return Log Books (series 1003) Written by the Head Teacher/Sole Teacher this daily diary includes important events and various activities held at the school. General Correspondence and Inspector’s Reports (series 1001) From about 1920 Inspector’s Reports and correspondence that earlier appeared on the Building and Site files were placed on separate files. 2 1. This guide has been produced as a supplementary finding-aid to the documentation and inventories of the archives relating to Maori schools held in the Auckland Regional Office of Archives New Zealand. 2. The list is in alphabetical order, by names of the schools. 3. The entry for a school shows (when complete): o the name of the school; o the geographical area in which it was located; o any alternative names in common use; o any changes of name or status; o the dates when the school became, and ceased to be, a Maori school. 4. Where the name of a school was changed, the date of change is represented by the closing date under the entry for the first name, and an opening date for a new entry, under the new name. To follow the history of a school that underwent one or more changes of name it is necessary to consult the entries for all the names by which it was known. 5. When allocating closure dates to schools, temporary closures (when the intention was to reopen the school) have been ignored. Opening and closing dates refer only to the status of the school as a Maori school, and not necessarily to its life as an educational institution. 6. Distances shown in the geographical notes against each school are given in kilometres. They are point to point measurements and are intended as approximate guides only. 7. Abbreviations and symbols used in the Guide: ¶ A Maori school in 1879 prior to Department of Education assuming control from the Native Department § Functioning as a Maori school until the abolition of separate state Maori schools and the transfer of the remaining ones to Education Board control in 1969 B Indicating whether the Maori school was formerly or subsequently under the control of an Education Board depending on position of symbol alongside opening or the closing date Formerly / subsequently Used to indicate changes of names See Used when the school was properly known by another name 3 8. The major sources for compiling this Guide were the Appendices to the Journals of the House of Representatives and the archives themselves. Complete information could not be obtained for every school. Information to supplement the guide (e.g. location of a school) is welcomed, and can be sent to: Regional Archivist, Archives New Zealand Auckland Regional Office, PO Box 201103, Auckland Airport, Manukau, Auckland 2150 (email: [email protected]). 9. School plans might be found on the Building and Site files in series 1001. 10. Other sources for school plans held in Auckland Regional Office are: • former Auckland Education Board records original school plans - series 19843 • Ministry of Education plans, Whangarei - series 14633 and 14634 • Ministry of Education, Waikato, school plans - series 10004 • former Hamilton Education Board plans - series 10521 • former Auckland Education Board plans - series 25090.
