The University of Tulsa • Class of 1960 Memory Book Greetings from the President Dear Friends: As members of the TU Class of 1960, you have witnessed dramatic changes – in civil rights, technology, commerce, and in the realm of what is possible for humankind. You have certainly noted the dramatic changes to our campus since your day, as well. In the past decade alone, we have doubled the value of our campus through an aggressive program of construction that continues today with our Lorton Performance Center and engineering expansion. For all the physical changes you can see, many others are taking place in less obvious areas. Year by year, our student body is becoming more academically distinguished and more geographically diverse. Our research enterprise is expanding and last year attracted a record $22 million in funding from outside sources. And we are increasingly partnering with other organizations – Gilcrease Museum, OU-Tulsa, the George Kaiser Family Foundation, the Kendall-Whittier Neighborhood Association and many others – to bring about change in our community. We are grateful when our alumni return to help us envision change and build an exciting future. You do that through service on our advisory boards, giving to our Annual Fund, mentorship of our student interns and hiring of our graduates, active participation in your local alumni chapter, and in many other ways. Your very participation in Homecoming 2010 helps strengthen and renew our family. As this weekend winds down and you leave campus to return to your regular routines, I encourage each of you to remember that you are part of TU’s ongoing success. I hope you will use your restored connections and rekindled friendships as inroads into new levels of involvement with the Alumni Association and with the University as a whole. Employment: I taught music and speech at Jane Addams Elementary School, in the Tulsa Public School system from 1960-1989. I also taught private flute lessons. I am currently retired. Leisure time activities: I am the principal flute player in our church orchestra. Additionally, I’m a member of the Oklahoma Native Plant Society, an organization that studies and photographs wild flowers and native plants. I belong to the Oklahoma State Chapter of the P.E.O Sisterhood and am the state Cottey Scholarship chair. I also enjoy annual vacations in the Colorado Rockies. Please share some of your favorite TU memories: I enjoyed music activities, including the band, orchestra, and private studies with Max Waits. I had the privilege of knowing Ellen Henneke who was our Mortar Board sponsor in 1959-1960. Family: Our daughter, Angela Kay, is a 1994 graduate of TU. Employment: I have worked for Phillips Petroleum Company, Andover Oil Company, Santa Fe Minerals and Arkla Exploration Company in the field of oil and gas exploration. Leisure time activities: I enjoy hunting, fishing and traveling. Please share some of your favorite TU memories: There were professors at TU I considered important. Beyond what they taught, it was what they expected of their students. Several of those important professors were Dr. Murray (geology), Dr. Veatch (math), Dr. Kaufman (chemistry), Dr. Hopkins (geology), Dr. Baker (geography) and Dr. Enlos (geology). Have you been involved with TU since graduation? Yes. I have provided financial support, and my daughter graduated from TU. What have you been up to for the past 50 years? While working for Phillips Petroleum Company, my family spent several years in Singapore and Egypt. I continue to work in the oil and gas business. 1960 Daniel M. Employment: I worked as the director of human resources at McDonnell Douglas in Tulsa for 16 years, Burtek for 14 years and Norris Sucker Rods for eight years. Leisure time activities: I enjoy playing golf, reading and travel, especially to Europe and Mexico. Please share some of your favorite TU memories: Dr. Phillip Howell was a great professor. Have you been involved with TU since graduation? I have been a season ticket holder for about 30 years. I also attended law school for a year as well as graduate school. 1960 Don E. Black Spouse’s current job/activities: Alice is retired. Family: We have eight children and stepchildren, 18 grand and step-grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. Employment: I worked for 1½ years in petrochemicals and 27 ½ years in the nuclear industry at Idaho National Laboratory; 10 years in environmental and nuclear engineering and 8 years in the nuclear industry at the Nevada Test Site. Leisure time activities: I enjoy fishing, skiing, travel, church choirs, hunting and reading. Please share some of your favorite TU memories: Three of my favorite memories were helping build an analog (vacuum tube) computer, being a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and graduating. Special professors were chemical engineering department chair, Paul Buthod and Dr. Kaufmann. Have you been involved with TU since graduation? I have been involved financially.
