The last player to reach 50 homers in the National League was Prince Fielder, who hit exactly 50 in 2007. Stanton hit his 17th home run of August today, extending his Club record for any month. He tied Willie Mays (1965), Sammy Sosa (2001), and Rudy York (1943) for the second-most home runs in August all- time. In Major League history, only York (18 in 1937), has hit more home runs in the month of August. Stanton became the earliest to 50 home runs by date since Sammy Sosa on August 26, 2001, and the eighth earliest overall. Stanton now has 23 home runs this season that have given the Marlins the lead, the most go-ahead in the National League since Albert Pujols also had 23 in 2006. Kyle Barraclough delivered a scoreless frame in the eighth earning his fifth win of the season, second among Marlins’ relievers, since being reinstated from the disabled list on August 15 he has allowed just one run in 7.2 innings over seven appearances (1.17 ERA), and opponents are batting .185 (5x27). The Marlins completed their eighth sweep of the Padres in series history, the first since a three-game sweep from May 4-6, 2012, in San Diego. Padres Notes: Clayton Richard hit the first home run by a San Diego pitcher this season in the fifth inning.
