SCREEN - Small and Craft Enterprises Electronic Networking Background SCREEN (Small and Craft Enterprises Electronic Networking) was developed to address the needs of the smallest companies accessing information technologies and especially Internet. SCREEN focused on businesses that were real beginners in the new communication technologies. SCREEN operated through awareness events and informal networks. Needs analysis Before and during the awareness events EICs(Euro Info Centres) interviewed participating companies as to their use of Internet, their development needs and the barriers they encountered. More than 1000 companies were covered. Awareness events Awareness events have been organised from March to October 2000 by 4 consortia of 5 EICs. Each consortium organised events in 5 European regions. The consortia were the following: • EIC Firenze (IT) with EICs of Volos (GR), Berlin (DE), Kristiansand (NO), Orléans (FR) • EIC Kassel (DE) with EICs of Santiago de Compostela (ES), Linz (AT), Galway (IR), Warszawa (PL) • EIC Viborg (DK) with EICs of Inverness (UK), Kuopio (FI), Poitiers (FR), Venezia Mestre (IT) • EIC Wiesbaden (DE) with EICs of Herning (DK), Bilbao (ES), Ravenna (IT), and London (UK). All together more than 1000 entrepreneurs have been reached through these activities. Awareness events provided participating companies with possibilities to test existing on-line services and give their opinion on these. In the events, success stories of companies already using Internet as information, communication and business tool have been presented. Directories Awareness events produced 4 trans-european directories compiling information about successful e-businesses and useful internet sites providing services to craft and small businesses. (For example, the directory of the Consortium Wiesbaden and the directory of the Consortium Kassel produced in three languages: original translations .) Follow-up The feedback gathered by the organisers of the awareness events was evaluated. Follow-up groups of entrepreneurs (Internet Clubs) have been established.
