Carya illinoinensis (Pecan) Walnut Family (Juglandaceae) Introduction: Pecan only grows native in the western part of Kentucky on the rich soils along the Mississippi and Green rivers. The nut is commercially important and grown on plantations in southern states. Pecan trees can grow very tall. Culture: Pecan grows best on rich, well-drained soils. Like other nut species, it produces a tap root and can be diffi cult to transplant. It can make a handsome land- scape plant where space permits.
