Situation Scallasaig is situated towards the bottom end of Glen More, about 1.5 miles east of the village of Glenelg on the west coast of the Scottish mainland, opposite the Isle of Skye. It is a most beautiful location with green fields, ancient woodland, views of dramatic hill tops and bounded by the Glenmore River which flows gently by. The sides of the glen are steep in places with dramatic corries and hill tops making way to plains of open moorland and heather slopes. Glenelg is one of the prettiest coastal villages on the western seaboard, with a population of around 90 inhabitants supplemented in summer by eager holiday makers taking advantage of the many gorgeous beaches and sheltered coves or taking the privately operated ferry across to Skye. Nearby is Sandaig where Gavin Maxwell wrote his classic story of Edal the otter, in Ring of Bright Water. The village has an excellent local shop, a primary school, village hall, medical centre and post office but is perhaps best known for the Glenelg Inn which is a magnet for locals and visitors throughout the year. Kyle of Lochalsh is about 25 miles away where there is a full range of shops and a supermarket. Directions To reach Scallasaig from the A87, turn west at Shiel Bridge onto the old military road which climbs the stunning Mam Ratagan Pass. Follow the road down into Glen More with The Sound of Sleet at the end. As the glen flattens out and about 1.5 miles before reaching Glenelg, turn left over the bridge crossing the Glenmore River and the gates into Scallasaig Lodge are on the right hand side.
