Tim Mulroy, Society Leader 1 FromFrom thethe DirectorDirector Maligayang Pasko po! A blessed and peace-filled Christmas to each and every one! Christmas is a wonderful time of year, especially here in the Philippines. It is a time of great joy because when Jesus was born in Bethlehem, God came to dwell among us. He is our Emmanuel. Pope Francis, in his encyclical “Laudato Si’”, reminds us that the baby Jesus who was born on that first Christmas night is the One “through whom all things were created, and has been united to this earth when he was formed in the womb of Mary” (Laudato Si’, 238). Jesus is one of us. And as Pope Francis reminds us, Jesus is a brother to every human being and of every one of God’s creatures that inhabits the Earth. We can only truly say that we love Jesus if we love and serve Him in the least and the poorest of our sisters and brothers and if we care for our exploited Planet Earth. By your continued support for the work of the Columban Missionaries through your prayers and through your generous pledges, you are an invaluable partner in our mission to spread the message of the Gospel; that to love God means to care for the poor and to care for the exploited Planet Earth. The wonderful message of Christmas that Jesus came to live among us assures us that, as our Good Shepherd, He will never abandon us; never! This year we are celebrating 90 years since the first Columban Missionaries came to the Philippines. Let us take some time to thank God for those early missionaries who left their homelands and families to journey with the people of the Philippines in loving and serving God. Many of these Columbans sacrificed their lives – many were killed in the Second World War or died violent deaths in Luzon and Mindanao – because they chose to stay with the people whom they served. Jesus is our “Emmanuel”; our God who never abandons us. During this Christmas Season let us take time to be with someone who is sad, lonely, depressed, hungry or feeling unwanted. No one should feel abandoned at Christmas time! On July 27, 1973, Father Don was shot in Barangay Baclay, Tukuran after being mistaken for another person. Almost brushing with the edge of his mortality enlightened him that in the great scheme of things, he was powerless without God’s grace and that his abilities do not measure up to what needs to be done in mission. This awareness only fuelled him to bridge the gap between "One captured moment of gratitude" Fr.
