Experience Sailing Class Outline Objective: Participants will be introduced to sailing concepts and terminology with the main focus on first-hand ​ experience of what it feels like to get out on the water under sail power. Depending on participant interest and ability, opportunities for hands on tiller and sail trim should be provided. Notes for instructor You are setting an example for students so always put safety first. (Also keep in mind that you are representing the CBC...) ○ Have safety dry bag accessible and discuss purpose for each item ○ Have radio accessible and use it to contact CBC (not cellphone) ○ sail within boundaries ○ follow rules of the road This class is left flexible to adjust based on participants' level of interest and ability. If they want more in-depth understanding of sailing concepts and/or hands on experience, tailor the class to suit them. Ideally, participants will come away having a general understanding of sailing but not be overloaded with information. This “experience” is potentially a feeder for students to enter the “Learn to Sail” class and often their first introduction to the CBC. ○ On Land (30 min) Note: Sailboat should be rigged prior to arrival of participants Introductions (5 min) ● Names of participants, sailing background, etc ● Reasons for taking/offering the course Overview of boat parts/safety equipment (10 min) ● Mast ● Boom ● Mainsail/mainsheet ● Jib/jibsheet ● Rudder/tiller ● Safety drybag and purpose of contents ● Radio and how to use it Overview of wind direction and its effect on sailing direction (5 min) ● wind signals ● wind clock ● no sail zone Overview of participant (crew) responsibilities (5 min) ● balance boat ● jib control ● docking Raise sails and set set off (5 min) On the water (2 hrs 15 min) Introduce sailing concepts and practice maneuvers (throughout sail session) ● skipper/crew dialogue ● wind clock ● no sail zone ● sail trim for upwind vs. downwind ● tacking ● jibing ● safety position ● puffs/lulls ● telltales ● lift Notes: ● Sail appropriately for group you are sailing with. For instance, if the group is intimidated by water or sailing, keep them in protected areas and make slower maneuvers. ● Provide opportunities for participants to handle tiller and/or main sheet if there is interest (and you judge them to have competent ability/skills) Return to Dock (15 min) Lower sails and debrief ● Participants assist with lowering sails ● Ask if students have any questions about sailing, CBC, etc. ● Notify students of “Learn to Sail” class, sailing checkoff procedures, and annual passes at CBC ● Tour facility if time permits and show other sailboats, kayaks, and rowboats. .
