#SundayGathering with Shaykh Omar Khan Sayyiduna Talhah Ibn ‘UbaidIllah (Allah be pleased with him) Sayyiduna Talhah Ibn ‘UbaidIllah (Allah be pleased with him) was from the foremost of the Companions to enter into the folds of Islam. He came into the folds of Islam upon the invitation of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As Siddeeq (Allah be pleased with him). It is narrated by Ibrahim Ibn Muhammad Ibn Talhah that Sayyiduna Talhah Ibn ‘UbaidIllah (Allah be pleased with him) went to the marketplace of Busra (an area of Damascus) when he came across a monk in a monastery saying, “Ask the people gathered here for business, is there anyone here from the people of Al Haram – Makkah Al Mukarramah?” Sayyiduna Talhah said, “Yes, I am from Al Haram.” The monk asked, “Has Ahmad become apparent after your arrival?” Sayyiduna Talhah asked, “Who is Ahmad?” The monk replied, “He is the son of AbdUllah Ibn ‘Abdil Muttalib. This the month in which he will announce Prophethood. He is the final Prophet of Allah. He will announce Prophethood in Al Haram and the place to which he will migrate is the area of date palms, heat, water and salt. You should rush to him.” Sayyiduna Talhah states that the words of the monk entered into his heart and he therefore rushed to Makkah and asked if anything had occurred during his absence. He was informed that Muhammad Ibn ‘AbdIllah who was known as Al Ameen (the trustworthy) had announced Prophethood and the son of Abu Quhaafah (i.e. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As Siddeeq) had followed him. Sayyiduna Talhah went to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As Siddeeq (Allah be pleased with him) and asked him if he had accepted and obeyed the Final Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu Bakr confirmed that he had accepted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and that Talhah should go into the Court of Allah’s Beloved and obey him for indeed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was calling towards the truth. Sayyiduna Talhah informed Sayyiduna Abu Bakr in relation to the words of the monk. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr took Talhah to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Sayyiduna Talhah (Allah be pleased with him) entered into the folds of Islam and he mentioned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) what he had been told by the monk. This pleased Allah’s Beloved (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). www.SundayGathering.co.uk /AlMuhammadiyya | www.Al-Muhammadiyya.com When Sayyiduna Talhah Ibn ‘UbaidIllah entered into the folds of Islam, he was persecuted along with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As Siddeeq by one of the most powerful members of the Quraish tribe, Nawfal Ibn Khuwailid. He tied them both with one rope. They were therefore named “Qareenaan” – the two linked Companions. Some scholars state that Othman Ibn ‘UbaidIllah tied Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As Siddeeq and Sayyiduna Talhah Ibn ‘UbaidIllah and prohibited them from praying and tried to prevent them from the religion of Islam. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Talhah Ibn ‘UbaidIllah (Allah be pleased with them both) did not compromise their beliefs in spite of the oppression. Whenever Othman Ibn ‘UbaidIllah observed them, he found them both praying. In Makkah Al Mukarramah, prior to migration, Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) established brotherhood between Sayyiduna Talhah Ibn ‘UbaidIllah and Az Zubair Ibn Al ‘Awwam (Allah be pleased with them both). After the migration to Al Madinah At Tayyibah, Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) established brotherhood between Sayyiduna Talhah and Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Al Ansari. Sayyiduna Talhah was amongst the six Companions who Sayyiduna Omar Ibn Al Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) appointed to consult and decide who would be Khalifah after him. Sayyiduna Omar said about these six Companions that Allah’s Messenger was pleased with them when he met his Lord. Al Bukhari narrates that Sayyiduna Omar said, “Nobody is more worthy in relation to this matter than those who Allah’s Messenger was pleased with when he passed away.” Then he named Sayyiduna Ali Ibn Abi Taalib, Sayyiduna Othman Ibn ‘Affan, Sayyiduna Az Zubair Ibn Al ‘Awwam, Sayyiduna Talhah Ibn ‘UbaidIllah, Sayyiduna Sa’d Ibn Abi Waqqas and Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman Ibn ‘Awf. During the battle of Badr, Sayyiduna Talhah Ibn ‘UbaidIllah (Allah be pleased with him) was in Ash Shaam (Syria, Palestine and Jordan) with Sayyiduna Sa’eed Ibn Zaid (Allah be pleased with him) in order to gather news in relation to the circumstances there for Allah’s Messenger. When they both returned, the battle had concluded. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) included them amongst the participants of the battle in relation to share in this world and reward in the hereafter. Sayyiduna Talhah (Allah be pleased with him) was present in all other battles and he was present at the time of the allegiance known as Bay’ah Ar Ridhwaan. During the battle of Uhud, Sayyiduna Talhah Ibn ‘UbaidIllah guarded Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) from arrows by putting his hands forward – this resulted in his fingers being paralysed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) climbed the back of www.SundayGathering.co.uk /AlMuhammadiyya | www.Al-Muhammadiyya.com Sayyiduna Talhah during the battle of Uhud when rising upon a rock. Sayyiduna Az Zubair Ibn Al ‘Awwam (Allah be pleased with him) said that he heard Allah’s Messenger saying that Talhah had made Jannah necessary for himself.1 Abu Nu’aim narrates from the mother of believers, Sayyidah A’ishah (Allah be pleased with her) that when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr would recall the day of Uhud, he would say, “That day was entirely the day of Talhah.” Mulla Ali Al Qari mentioned that Sayyiduna Talhah received twenty four wounds during the Battle of Uhud.2 Sayyiduna Talhah was well known for his generosity. His son, Musa Ibn Talhah narrates that Sayyiduna Talhah said, “Allah’s Messenger named me Talhah Al Khair (Talhah the good) on the day of Uhud, Talhah Al Fayyadh (Talhah the Generous) on the day of hardship (i.e. the battle of Tabook) and Talhah Al Jud (Talhah, the embodiment of generosity). ‘Uqbah Ibn ‘Alqamah narrates from Sayyiduna Ali Ibn Abi Talib who said that he heard Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying, “Talhah and Zubair are my neighbours in Jannah.”3 1 At Tirmidhi Hadith No: 3738 2 Al Mirqaat ul Mafaateeh 3At Tirmidhi Hadith No: 3741 www.SundayGathering.co.uk /AlMuhammadiyya | www.Al-Muhammadiyya.com .
