I am particularly appreciative of those state branches which are pursuing their own activities with such vigour, and for the close liaison kept with local members that these activities entail. I am hopeful and optimistic that in spite of financial cut backs from the Music Board, that the various state cultural affairs departments will provide support for local activities and for participation in national and international events. The Music Board was generous in Z9?9 and Z980, but Z9BZ will only see one national conference, with no support for the IAML conference in Budapest, and no support for the joint LAA/NZLA conference in January. IAMLANZ was able to support James Murdoch's attendance at this conference through funds not expended but allocated for last year's meeting in November, The IAMLANZ secretariat will now be housed at the Australia Music Centre, with Martin Buzacott being acting secretary/treasurer. This will enable the continuity of the Association's business affairs to be placed on to a more secure basis with administrative support from the Centre's staff. I would Zike to thank publicly both Ann Wellman and Laurel Garlick who contibuted enormous efforts to the Z9?9 conference. Its success was such a catalyst to subsequent IAMLANZ activities, and a fine tribute to them both. PRUE NEIDORF President I.A.M.L.A.N.Z. - 1 - REPORT ON IAMLANZ GENERAL MEETING, 27-28 NOVEMBER 1980 HELD AT THE AUSTRALIA MUSIC CENTRE, SYDNEY The 1980 IAMLANZ General Meeting was convened primarily to bring together representatives from each state and from each IAMLANZ project, so that activities planned for 1981 could be put on a workable basis, and so that sufficient information about these activities could be discussed and turned into reports to be published in Continuo, Although our current funds are relatively healthy, the Music Board has rejected the International components of the IAMLANZ submission for 1981. These consisted of one representative to be sent to Budapest and three to Christchurch. The only activity funded was one national meeting and for the 3R's. (A total of $2734). The meeting agreed that a second submission be presented to the Music Board for the IAML Conference, as there are now 6 Australians on IAML and IASA working committees (we have had no response to this second submission yet). One delegate was nominated to go to Christchurch (in the event, James Murdoch attended the conference). A RISM report was presented and this will be published in Continuo. Verbal reports on RILM and RidIM were also presented. Music Board submissions for 1982 are due in May 1981, and all requests from state branches, representatives and individuals are to be submitted to the President before the end of April. We will seek increased funding for Continuo, the 3Ris, Union Catalogue of Orchestral Scores and IAML Brus sells. It was also agreed that state representatives should also apply to their State Cultural Affairs Branches for funding, Reports from Cambridge were presented by Prue Neidorf, Jo Parkes, Jane Hardie and James Murdoch. The meeting discussed the paper presented by Hayden Sugden at the AACOBS conference in August, and Pixie Crook's response. It was agreed that IAMLANZ support any application AACOBS may make, and send letters of appreciation to the paper givers. It was resolved that IAMLANZ liaise with the Adelaide chapter of the M.S.A. with a view to a joint conference next August involving Professor Kurt von Fischer. - 2 - Extensive discussion was given to Continua, with Ralph Bott and Martin Buzacott nominated as editors. David Mercer is to be responsible for the compilation of the next Directory of Music Libraries. Siglas used by NUCOM will be used in future dealings with RISM. Gordon Abbott will be chairman of the Union Listing of Orchestral Scores project, proposed by him and Pixie Crook. A copy of their reports was to be given to each State Cultural Director. Nucomusic is now in four sequences, all searchable, and there are no filing backlogs. A new sequence will begin in January 1981 with uniform titles according to AACR2. The National Library has issued a draft report on selection policies for library materials, which include music and sound recordings. A response from IAMLANZ members is welcomed. The agenda for the 1981 Adelaide Conference was discussed. It was resolved that the Conference would begin Friday of the last week in August and close midday Sunday. It was suggested that the general IAMLANZ meeting be held on the Friday afternoon. A IAMLANZ national committee onrcataloguing has been set up with Jo Parkes in the chair, Paul Bentley responsible for Dewey, Gordon Abbott for AUSMARC, Prue Neidorf ISBN (NBM) and Jane Hardie for ISBN (A). Active participation on this committee is highly desirable for as many members as possible, A letter expressing IAMLANZ's concern for the training of music librarians has been drafted by Jane Hardie, to be sent to the L.A.A. IAMLANZ was happy to have Ian Neil from the Music Board and Dulcie Stretton from the Library Council, as observers and welcomed their contributions and advice. The minutes of this meeting were taken by Frances Simmons, research officer of the Australia Music Centre and copies are available from either Prue Neidorf or Martin Buzac.ott;, IAMLANZ wishes to express its appreciation for all the help for its activities given by the Centre and by all members of its staff. - 3 - REPORT ON ACTIVITIES IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA TO IAMLANZ GENERAL MEETING, NOVEMBER 27, 1980 Staff changes Hayden Sugden, who has been Music Librarian in the Central Music Library since 1976, was appointed Divisional Librarian of the Accessions Division of the Library Board of W.A. in August 1980. As Music Librarian Hayden promoted IAMLANZ in Western Australia and made important contacts with libraries in other states. Julie Ham, who has worked in the Central Music Library for four years, is the new Music Librarian. AACOBS Conference At the AACOBS conference on 'Bibliographical Services to the Nation' held in Sydney on 26-27 August, Hayden Sugden presented a paper entitled 'The need for improved bibliographical services in the field of Australian music'. Alexander Library Building The plans for the Alexander Library Building, which will house all the divisions of the Library Board of W.A., have now been finalized. 2 The Central Music Library will occupy 78lm on the second floor of the building. The building is scheduled for completion in 1984. Donations Two major donations of orchestral parts have been received by the Central Music Library in the past year. The donations have come from two orchestras which no longer exist. The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra (about 270 sets) and the Metropolitan Orchestral Society (about 100 sets). A catalogue of the orchestral sets held in the Central Music Library is nearly completed and will be ready for printing in April 1981.
