•2011 CJFL Record Book Final:2007 Record Book

…Introduction This edition of our Record Book includes some new material and recent research. First, we had an opportunity to obtain the original game sheets from former PJFC Chief Statistician Darly Slade. These sheets are from 1976 to 1982 and provide us with a hugh catalogue of lost information. Included in the Prairie papers were copies of weekly stats releases from the BC, Manitoba and Ontario Conferences. In particular there was a 1978 letter from former OFC Chief Statistician Lloyd Norton regarding the suspension of the Etobicoke-Lakeshore Bears by President Paul Teolis. In researching this matter we also found that Scarboro Rams ceased operations for the season some 10 days later and that both teams were missing in previous OFC final standings. This has been updated. Also, we have learned from Paul Shortt that the 1978 BC league had similar issues in 1978. North Shore Cougars failed to field a team and Vancouver Blue Bombers folded after just two games. More detailed information can be found in the 1978 Milestone section. Secondly, more newspaper articles became available for the Eastern teams of 1904 to 1913, the Manitoba juniors of 1912 & 1913, the Western Groups of the 1927 Jr ORFU, as well as the 1949 and 1970 Jr ORFU. These team standings have been update. New research information on the actual organization structure of both the ORFU and the QRFU have required us to refer to them as the Junior ORFU or QRFU per say rather than the ORFU- QRFU Juniors. The Eastern team standings are updated on this change. And in the West, we have correctly named the PFC as it was first called, that of the Prairie Junior Football Conference. Also, we now make reference to the Lakeshore Bears by their official name, that of the Etobicoke- Lakeshore Bears. Paul Shortt has found missing scores and team standing from the junior Quebec Union of 1919 & 1920 and thus filled in some lost history. He has research material on the formation of the WCRFU of 1911 and the WIFU of 1936 pertaining to Junior ball. Ron White, Mr. Alumni, has reminded us of the original name of the BC Football in 1947 as Big Four Football. And has provided us with a 1974 mailing list of Junior Football Executive members which has been updated. We have noted season media guides confirming the junior football name and logo changes and they have been revised. They are displayed on the front cover. We found a player, K. Mackenzie from the Kingston Collegiate Institute who kicked 5 singles in a championship game in 1913. I wrote to the school, now known as the Kingston Collegiate & Vocational Institute and received an email from Ms. Joanne Whitfield, a teacher-librarian informing me that there are pictures of this player on their athletic wing hall. She consulted their register from 1913, a crowbar was used, and found that Kenneth Mackenzie was a Grade 10 student of slight built and noted as a great kicker and a very good speller. We have found that the late Ed Henick of Saskatoon fame, first a player, assistant coach, Hilltop President as well as PJFC President, scored two touchdowns on fumble returns in a Sept 18, 1948 game. Has been credited with a junior career record of 4 in this section. We have introduced three new team stats to the record book. Average rushing gain, average gain per pass attempts and average gain from scrimmage. This will reflect the dominance of many powerhouse team over the years and an opportunity to understand their strength. We have recently learned that the first Quebec junior championship took place in 1887 and thus more research is required. And finally we have found several more incidents providing more insight to our history. They are found at the end of the book. I’m sure you will find the stories from pre-1914 and 1978 interesting. We are by no means complete.
