Mad King/Fat Knight features over 40 drawings and paintings, depicting private, backstage moments alongside unforgettable theatrical performances. The exhibition provides a unique insight into Sher’s preparation for two of his most memorable Shakespearean roles – King Lear and Sir John Falstaff. Many of the works in this exhibition are illustrations from his books Year of the Fat Knight, the Falstaff Diaries, which describe the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 2014 production of Henry IV Parts I & II, and Year of the Mad King, the Lear Diaries, about playing the title role in the RSC’s 2016 production. As an Honorary Associate Artist of the RSC, Antony Sher’s roles have included Richard III, Macbeth, Shylock, Iago, Leontes, Prospero, Falstaff and King Lear. Sher is one of Britain’s leading actors, as well as a respected author and artist. Sher’s previous art exhibitions have been at the Barbican Centre, the National Theatre, the London Jewish Cultural Centre, the Crucible Theatre Sheffield and Coventry’s Herbert Art Gallery and Museum. The Royal Shakespeare Company is acting as an agent on behalf of Antony Sher.
