PASSOVER RESOURCES This year, Passover begins on Saturday night. This is a slightly unusual situation, which hasn't occurred since 2008. It presents us with a variety of practical and ritual challenges. Here are a few guidelines to help you navigate: The fast of the firstborn is observed on Thursday, March 25. Please join us at 7:30am for minyan (online-only), followed immediately by our Siyyum on the same live video stream. Those who participate in a Siyyum such as this need not fast after it. If you haven't already done so, be sure to arrange for the sale of your Chametz no later than Thursday. You can do so by clicking here and filling out the form. The search for Chametz takes place on Thursday evening. For instructions, click here. The formula to recite in the morning will be delayed until Saturday. We may not possess any Chametz after 11:56am in Los Angeles on Friday morning, aside from any that we might reserve to eat on Friday and Saturday morning. The ritual destruction of Chametz takes place before 11:56am on Friday morning, without any blessing or verbal formula. Chametz which has been sold is not considered to be in our possession. All items for the Seder plate should be prepared and arranged before Shabbat. PASSOVER RESOURCES All kashering of utensils, covering of surfaces for Passover and storage of Chametz utensils must be completed before Shabbat begins. Utensils that might be used for Chametz on Shabbat are the only exception. For Shabbat meals, it is recommended that you only use kosher-for-Passover food and utensils, like any Passover meal, substituting Egg Matzah or some other "enriched" Matzah (not standard or whole-wheat Matzah) for Challah. Those who avoid "enriched Matzah" on the holiday itself should conclude eating it on Saturday by 10:54am, essentially substituting an early Shabbat brunch for lunch. Using non-kosher-for-Passover items at these meals necessitates complicated preparation, timing, cleaning and disposal. Under all circumstances, no Chametz may be eaten after 10:54am on Saturday. Any remaining Chametz must be disposed and rendered inedible by 11:56am, in a manner that does not violate Shabbat. This could include flushing small pieces down the toilet. The final formula related to the search and destruction of Chametz is recited by 11:56am in Los Angeles. Once Shabbat has begun, no Seder preparations may be made until Shabbat has concluded at 7:48pm.
