COURSE DESCRIPTION: Basic concepts of autism. Topics include description, identification, interventions and treatments, and developmental approach. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOME: 1. Student will be able to provide a definition of Autism Spectrum Disorders according to the DSM- V. 2. Student will be able to identify and describe the first four social-emotional levels of functioning. 3. Student will be able to provide strategies to address deficits in each of the four social-emotional levels of functioning. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of the course, students will have the preparation to: 1. Identify the indicators, social symptoms, communication difficulties, and repetitive behaviors associated with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. 2. Evaluate resources (internet, support groups, books) available for Autistic Spectrum Disorders. 3. Identify the primary intervention strategies for Autistic Spectrum Disorders. 4. Compare the primary intervention strategies for Autistic Spectrum Disorders. 5. Apply the primary intervention strategies for Autistic Spectrum Disorders under appropriate supervision. CLASS FORMAT: The class format may include: lecture, student participation, small group activities, large group activities, individual and group presentations, and parent and professional speakers. In-class participation is essential. The knowledge you acquire from participation will give you skills that you will be able to apply when working with children and their families in your current or future careers. In-class activities cannot be made up. If you are absent from class, tardy, or need to leave early, it is your responsibility to obtain class announcements or notes that are not posted to my website from another student. I recommend exchanging phone numbers with two other students, students that you do not carpool with. INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS AND ASSIGNMENTS: 1. 12 in-class assignments 10 points each TBA 2. Sensory Integration Article Summary/Reflection Paper: 25 points TBA 3. Parent Panel 15 points TBA 4. 4 Chapter Quizzes 10 points each TBA 5. 5 Video Summaries 10 points each 6. Attendance 10 points 7. Final 50 points 12/7 Assignments may be deleted if time does not allow and will be reflected by total points available when determining grade. 90% of points available = A 80% of points available = B 70% of point available = C 60% of points available = D Description of Assignments 1. In-Class Activities: In-class activities cannot be made up. Students will get into pairs and complete activity sheets. If you are absent from class, tardy, or need to leave early, you are not able to make these up. 2. Sensory Integration Article Summary/Reflection Paper: Each student will write a summary of an article provided. The article will be posted on the web page two weeks before due. Guidelines for the summary will be provided. 3. Parent Panel: A panel of parents will be invited to share their child’s story and their family’s story. Attendance is required. The following week students will write a summary of their experience and write a minimum of one adaptation you would consider for each of the children on the panel if they were in your classroom/home visit. 4. Chapter Quizzes: The quizzes will take place at the beginning of class and will be announced the week before. These cannot be made up if you are not present. Weekly quizzes will be from assigned readings and lectures. The test will consist of multiple choice and true/false questions. Answers will be submitted on Scantron #882-E forms. The format will be T/F and multiple choice, using a scantron. 5. Video Summaries: Following four specific videos announced before viewing, students will submit a typewritten one-page summary of the video. This paper cannot be written as you are watching the video. No computers will be allowed during viewing of the videos. Research is clear that students who write out notes and then reprocess the information later will retain more of the information in the video. 6. Attendance: Attendance will be determined by assignments completed in class and quizzes. Occasionally roll will be taken at the end of class to earn the points for the evening. 7. Final: The final will consist of the Course Learning Outcomes (3). It will be essay format. Classroom/Course Policies Assignments are collected at the beginning of class on the due date. Late submission papers are accepted two class periods following the due date for a 20% deduction for each class day late. At the conclusion of each class, students will be provided with the up-to-date assignment for the next class meeting. Students not present will want to communicate with their contact person to ensure preparedness in the event of an exam or change in due date of assignments. Students not attending until the end of the class period risk missing critical information that can determine the successful completion of the course. All papers must be Times New Roman, font size 12, double space only. Do not use bold type, do not print in any color other than black. All papers not submitted with this criteria will be returned for resubmission and will result in a 20% point reduction. Absolutely no cell phone use during class time and MUST be put on silent or turned off. If a phone is on vibrate and I hear it, the student will be asked to leave. Any phone observed during class or reported used during class will result in the student being asked to leave class. If a second event occurs, student will meet with instructor and instructor will follow the Student Code of Conduct for disorderly conduct during class. If you have an emergency and you believe you need to keep your phone on vibrate, please see me. Don’t cheat. All cheating will be responded to. Welcome!
