Hall of Fame Inductees, Class of 2013 Jenny Heidt, Westminster Schools In her time at Pace and Westminster, Jenny Heidt has helped increase the prestige and quality of policy debate in the state of Georgia. On the National circuit, teams coached by Jenny have won the National Tournament of Champions 5 times, the Baker Award 3 times, and a number of Georgia State Championships. In 2012, Jenny was inducted in the National Tournament of Champions Hall of Fame for Coaches. In addition to her success on the local and national circuit, she has done a great deal to support the development of debate in Georgia. First, she hosts the first novice debate tournament of the year every year. At this tournament, she helps promote a great educational environment that helps introduce and retain students in the activity. She also provides a beginner workshop for students and coaches. Second, she has been a contributor to the novice evidence packet produced for policy debate. Third, she has provided a number of wonderful power points and resources to help coaches teach novice debaters. Finally, she has been very supportive and instrumental in the development of the middle school debate circuit. Steven Stein, Chattahoochee High School Steve Stein coached at Chattahoochee from 1999 to 2004, where he began a tradition of excellence in policy debate in a community. Steve helped begin several educational institutions in the Atlanta area before departing to the Boston Urban Debate League. In 2002, Steve, alongside Lisa Willoughby of Grady, created the GFCA 1st & 2nd Year State Championships to honor young debaters for their achievements. Along with this tournament, Steve co-founded the Atlanta Urban Middle School Debate League. This league continues to feed strong middle school debaters into high school programs today. Not only did Steve help the state and community but he built Chattahoochee High School into a local and national powerhouse. He qualified six teams to the Tournament of Champions, and won two Varsity State championships, 3 JV State Championships, and 3 Novice State Championships. Steve was the first coach to ever win all three levels of Policy Debate in the same year back to back. Bill Swafford, Lee County High School Bill Swafford certainly has enough years of service. For 44 years, Bill Swafford has coached programs all over the United States, including Colorado, Kentucky, Indiana, and Georgia. Bill began in Georgia coaching Albany High School, where he was able to coach to his oldest son to many successful tournaments. He later moved to Lee County High School, where he was able to achieve many successes including the 2013 GFCA Varsity Congressional Debate State Championship, and many NFL, NCFL and TOC qualifiers in speech. It can be said that Bill Swafford is the reason why debate still exists today in the Albany area. One of his former students has this to say, “Aside from my father, no other man has had such a significant impact in my life as Mr. Swafford. He has worked with me for countless hours after school, on weekends, and even over multiple summer breaks. Without his help and critiques, I would be nowhere near the public speaker I am today. Instead, I would still be the stumbling and bumbling freshman who had a propensity to talk too much. For having such an impact, I can never thank him enough. And even though he’s retiring this year, he still will remain committed to coaching the team and, hopefully, continuing to lead them to more victories across the state and country.” Georgia Forensic Coaches Association Schools of Excellence Recipients The Schools of Excellence Awards are given to the school in each size classification who qualified the most number of students to the State Championships. Each award is named after a GFCA Hall of Fame coach. This tradition was started in 2011 by Claude Robinson of Lincoln County High School. Congratulations to the winners!
