!1 of !16 Angels and Demons adairsvillesda.org December 29, 2018 Recap - Last week we journeyed from the time before the flood all the way to the exodus from Egypt the journey to the promised land. We learned about two opposing principles each represented by a side in the controversy between good and evil. We learned that God has a cure for Sin and Selfishness. We learned more of the continued unfolding of the plan of saving man through a system called the sanctuary and the atonement. " Prayer: ———————————————————-" Israel finally enters the land promised to Abraham and his descendants" -at first all is well - they are told the result of living unselfishly by the law vs. selfishly like the nations around them. They care for the poor, they are giving…" -the time of the judges - Deborah, Gideon, Samson," -the time of the kings, Saul, David, Solomon. " -in Solomon’s life Israel becomes what God intended - a blessing to the world " Solomon begins to set up worship to the gods of the nations around him. " They begin to worship the gods of the nations around them. Who were these gods? Ashtoreth" Also called Astarte, or Ashtoreth (plural), the Moon goddess of the Canaanites was connected with fertility and maternity. King Solomon, influenced by his foreign wives, fell into Ashtoreth worship, which led to his downfall." Baal" Baal, sometimes called Bel, was the supreme god among the Canaanites, worshiped in many forms, but often as a sun god or storm god. He was a fertility god who supposedly made the earth bear crops and women bear children. Rites involved with Baal worship included cult prostitution and sometimes human/child sacrifice. A famous showdown occurred between the prophets of Baal and Elijah at Mount Carmel. Worshiping Baal was a recurring temptation for the Israelites, as noted in the book of Judges. Di$erent regions paid homage to their own local variety of Baal, but all !2 of !16 worship of this false god infuriated Jehovah, who punished Israel for their unfaithfulness to him." Chemosh" Chemosh, the subduer, was the national god of the Moabites and was also worshiped by the Ammonites. Rites involving this god were said to be cruel also and may have involved human sacrifice. Solomon erected an altar to Chemosh south of the Mount of Olives outside Jerusalem, on the Hill of Corruption. (2 Kings 23:13)" Dagon" This god of the Philistines had the body of a fish and a human head and hands in its statues. Dagon was a god of water and grain. Samson, the Hebrew judge, met his death at the temple of Dagon. In 1 Samuel 5:1-5, after the Philistines captured the ark of the covenant, they placed it in their temple next to Dagon. The next day Dagon's statue was toppled to the floor. They set it upright, and the next morning it was again on the floor, with the head and hands broken o$. Later, the Philistines put King Saul's armor in their temple and hung his severed head in the temple of Dagon. Egyptian Gods" Ancient Egypt had more than 40 false gods, although none are mentioned by name in the Bible. They included Ra, creator sun god; Isis, goddess of magic; Osiris, lord of the afterlife; Anubis - god of the dead, Thoth, god of wisdom and the moon; and Horus, god of the sun. Oddly, the Hebrews were not tempted by these gods during their 400+ years of captivity in Egypt. The Ten Plagues of God against Egypt were humiliations of ten specific Egyptian gods. Marduk" This god of the Babylonians was associated with fertility and vegetation. Confusion about Mesopotamian gods is common because Marduk had 50 names, including Bel. He was also worshiped by the Assyrians and Persians." Milcom, Moloch, Molech" This national god of the Ammonites was associated with divination, seeking knowledge of the future through occult means, strongly forbidden by God. Child sacrifice was sometimes connected with Milcom. He was among the false gods worshiped by Solomon at the close of his reign. Moloch, Molech, and Molek were variations of this false god." !3 of !16 Deuteronomy 32:17 - “They sacrificed to demons, which are not God, gods they had not known...," The Heathen nations worshipped demons, devils - the fallen angels The “familiar spirits” that many recieved messages from were not the spirits of the dead, but the fallen angels…." Ancient idolatry, which, as we have seen, comprises both worship of the dead and pretended communion with them, is declared by the Bible to have been demon worship. The apostle Paul, in warning his brethren against participating, in any manner, in the idolatry of their heathen neighbors, says, “The things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God, and I don’t want you to have fellowship with devils.” 1 Corinthians 10:20. The psalmist, speaking of Israel, says that “they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils,” and in the next verse he explains that they sacrificed them “unto the idols of Canaan.”Psalm 106:37, 38 (Baal and Ashtoreth, The sun god and moon god) . In their supposed worship of dead men they were in reality worshiping demons. PP 685.4 Modern spiritualism, resting upon the same foundation, is but a revival in a new form of the witchcraft and demon worship that God condemned and prohibited of old. It is foretold in the Scriptures, which declare that “in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.” 1 Timothy 4:1. Paul, in his second letter to the Thessalonians, points to the special working of Satan in spiritualism as an event to take place immediately before the second advent of Christ. Speaking of Christ's second coming, he declares that it is “after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders.” 2 Thessalonians 2:9. " —Israel is taken into slavery again - to Babylon——" Daniel in Babylon gives us a glimpse of the physical war behind the scenes" % Daniel 9 / 10 - Princes and Kings - purpose of prayer - requesting help or giving permission, Also humility -realizing who is in charge " - the rules of the great controversy - Job showed us there are councils, there are permissions given. " - Michael - The Archangel the commander of the armies in heaven - (Rev 12/19), The one who resurrected Moses - the Archangel (Job 1), The one who presides in Judgment- the Great Prince - stands watch over the people of God, (Dan 12:1)" !4 of !16 - Angels over empires -Ezekiel 28/Isaiah 14 - an address to the Princes and Kings" Here’s an interesting quote: Why did Christ elect to enter the arena of human life as a man and to suffer and die for human redemption, whereas it is revealed that he made no such decision or movement on behalf of fallen angels who also had sinned? People have o$ered learned explanations why such should have been so, alleging that angels sinned with their eyes open, whereas man was deceived, and that angels found the source of temptations within themselves and not from an external source, as in the case of man; but the view here is that it is a part of the mystery ‘hidden before times eternal!’ and that it does not lie within the periphery of complete finite understanding. The forgiveness which God provided for man is absolutely unique, there being no precedent of any such thing in heaven or upon earth. Where, in all the universe, is there such a thing as the forgiveness of sins, apart from Christ our Lord? ? How utterly unaccountable, therefore, is the heavenly grace exhibited on behalf of sinful man, a grace conveyed at such awful cost!” (Burton Co$man, Commentary on Hebrews, Austin, TX: Firm Foundation, 1971, pp. 58-59)." Like a flight missed that crashed!!!! How grateful are the angels who defected and repented? What do we know about these fallen angels - the demons?
