Free ISSUE 7 July 2003 Donations Welcome THE VOICE OF YOUR COMMUNITY The Day the Earth Moved! inside At 6.44 a.m. on the morning of Friday 20 June the Aberfoyle area was hit by what sounded like a dull explosion and our whole house shook so badly that the bedroom windows P2 actually rattled. Our dogs, sprawled across the floor around the bed (I know-don’t ask), jerked their heads up. That was all. Realising that it was not breakfast time, they settled P4 down once more. It was us humans who were more apprehensive. P5 My first thought was that the gas tank had exploded. My wife and I both sat in stunned P6 silence but nothing further happened. The ceiling had not fallen in on us. The house still stood. So we waited for the sirens because surely somewhere there had been a dreadful P7 accident. Still silence. I then said to my wife that it must be one of two things: either it was a controlled explosion or it was an earthquake. I was told not to be so silly. Whoever heard P8 of an earthquake in Scotland, for goodness’ sake! Well, that day the earth moved for me – P9 I won an argument with my wife, an occurrence as rare as hens’ teeth. The earthquake fortunately caused no injury or damage to property. There were two further P10 tremors that morning, both lesser in intensity. Aberfoyle Village Enhancement Initiative P12 In the wee small hours of June 27 there Public Consultation P14 were three further tremors. These did not seem so violent in intensity as those of Exhibition of Plans the previous week. It seemed like a th th ‘wooshing’ sound, like thunder in the Wed 20 Aug to Tues 26 Aug distance. “ ‘Er indoors” slept through it all. Trossachs Discovery Centre, Aberfoyle When I mentioned what I had heard the Public Consultation Meeting following morning, she opined it was Tuesday 26th August 6.30pm – 8.00pm thunder. She was wrong. 2-nil. It can’t last! And it all came about purely by chance. Stewart, who is a student at St Andrews University, was on 01324 a short visit to London when he was approached by a 625624 talent scout on the lookout for a male model for their new Specsaver advert. Being a student, Stewart thought the extra money might come in useful. His mother, Anne, was apparently sceptical when he mentioned on the telephone that he had been approached by a model agency. She changed her mind when Stewart T/A J. Brown was flown out to Teneriffe for the shoot. Needless to say, Coal Merchant & Contractor he thoroughly enjoyed the experience. 12-14 Slamannon Road Look out for his poster in a shop window near you!
