This invite-only event is made possible by a generous Michigan Theater donor. Lee is an American film director, producer, writer, and actor. In 1989, with Do the Right Thing, he became the first African American to move decisively into the front rank of the film industry, while breaking new ground in his portrayal of the black community and creating a work that has since become a lasting testament to its time and place. Over a career that now spans three decades, he has gone on to make more than thirty films in every genre, including intimate family dramas, crime thrillers, historical epics, satires, musicals, and documentaries. His production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, has produced more than 45 films since 1983. Lee’s work has been formally recognized by his peers throughout his career, earning him an Emmy Award, two Academy Award nominations, and the 2013 Gish Prize “for his brilliance and unwavering courage Director Spike Lee in using film to challenge conventional thinking.” Do the Right Thing, Lee’s first Academy Award-nominated film, tells the story of a neighborhood's simmering racial tension, which comes to a head and culminates in tragedy on the hottest day of the summer. In addition to starring Lee in the lead role, Do the Right Thing features Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Richard Edson, Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn, John Turturro, and Samuel L. Jackson, with debuts by Martin Lawrence and Rosie Perez. Although the screening is by invitation only and has a maximum capacity of 200 attendees (including some area film students), Spike Lee fans will have two chances to score an invite: • Each person who purchases a Cinetopia pass ($75 to $200) will be entered to win a pair of tickets to the event. • Those who purchase a Personal Sponsorship Pass ($1000) will be entitled to receive a pair of tickets to the event. Lee is the latest addition to a stellar line-up of filmmakers and stars who will attend Cinetopia, including directors John Sayles (Lone Star, Eight Men Out) and Tommy Oliver (the Cinetopia film 1982), actors David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck, Lincoln, The Bourne Ultimatum) and Hill Harper (CBS’s CSI: NY, He Got Game, 1982), plus 30 additional special film guests from around the world.
