What Is Social Isolation? What Is Emotional Isolation? Seeking Help

Many of us have felt isolation at certain points in our life. It is the feeling of deep loneliness. It is caused by emotional or social detachment from others. Social and emotional isolation is not the same as solitude, which is usually a choice. Taking time to be alone can be healthy. Alone time allows us to focus on our own needs, goals, and feelings. However, if solitude turns into isolation and a person feels disconnected from those around them, he or she may develop social anxiety or depression. What is social isolation? As mentioned above, some alone time is normal. It becomes unhealthy when people spend too much time alone and no longer receive any benefits from it. Some common behaviors of social isolation are staying home for days, not talking with friends, and avoiding all contact with people. Social isolation can increase feelings of low self-worth, shame, and loneliness. What is emotional isolation? Emotional isolation can be a result of social isolation, caused by a person lacking a close friend or intimate partner. Healthy relationships are necessary for our well-being. Unhealthy relationships that cause negative feelings and thoughts can cause emotional isolation. When people are emotionally isolated, they keep their feelings completely to themselves and are unable to receive emotional support from others. Emotional isolation can occur within romantic relationships. This can be a result of cheating, abuse, or other trust issues. One or both parties may feel alone within the relationship, rather than supported. Seeking help Therapy can help address the issues that lead to isolating behaviors. Sometimes isolation is not a choice. Some people want to have friends and be social, but feel they are unable to do so out of fear. Additionally, many people battle a sense of isolation during major life transitions, such as the death of a loved one. Others may experience isolation due to living in a remote area. In any case, feelings of isolation can be harmful. Therapy can help a person deal with their feelings and learn to manage their symptoms.
