COURSE OUTLINE : PHOT 040 Last Revised and Approved: 11/17/2014 CURRICULUM Subject Code and Course Number: PHOT 040 Division : Visual Arts and Media Studies Course Title : FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY Summarize the need/purpose/reason for this proposal There are no other courses offered in the photo curriculum specifically dedicated to working commercially in the area of fashion photography. Modification to prerequisite, addition of MOIs, MOEs. SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes) 1. Demonstrate proficiency in digital cameras, using a light meter and battery operated flash sources. 2. Produce a group of fashion photographs that exhibits technical skill and a clear conceptual basis. 3. Demonstrate skills in planning, interpreting, and presenting a fashion photographically. SPOs (Student Performance Objectives) 1a. Demonstrate skills in the manipulation of lighting ratios to fashion photography. 1b. Show an increased skill in controlling exposures using a digital camera. 1c. Demonstrate skills in using medium and/or large format cameras. 2a. Produce fashion photographs in both high and low fashion styles. 3a. Utilize the critique process to demonstrate an awareness of the critical evaluation of a photograph in terms of the standards of professional commercial fashion. 3b. Write exams, and/or analysis that communicate an understanding of fashion photography as they relate to the commercial photographic scene. CCOs (Course Content Outline) 1. Methods of Instruction In-class lectures detailing project concepts, technical steps and presentation guidelines, In-class lab to execute projects, quizzes testing students on conceptualizing for Fashion, technique and safety, in- class discussions exploring editing and project concepts, critiques where the work created is deciphered and discussed, PowerPoint lectures where they choose subject matter of interest through independent and collaborative research and discussion, field trips to analyze historical research, guest lecturers formulating, assigned readings both technical and critical, demonstrations on diagraming lighting plots, grading rubric as self analyzation and student evaluation, group projects aiding in further understanding of presented technical and conceptual information, documentary films presenting historical and critical information, demonstrations formulating and creating chemistry and coating substrates, portfolio creation where visual work is created and presented. For this assignment you will be divided into groups. Each member of the group will sit for another student and be photographed using the following lighting setups: single source, back-lighting, front-lighting, three-point lighting, side-lighting. #2: Fashion and Storytelling. Fashion photography often takes stories from popular media and literature to generate a concept for a magazine layout. Select a story from fiction or popular media to inspire a 5-page fashion spread for a high end magazine. You will be required to direct, prop, style, and shoot the spread. TECHNICAL DETAILS Catalog Description Commercially oriented course with assignments covering fashion and fashion specific product photography in the studio and on location to produce a photograph that sells an idea, product, or service. Fundamentals of studio photography including strobes, electronic metering, digital SLR and lighting for fashion. Business practices in commercial and editorial photography will be discussed. Students are expected to become visually and technically competent with artificial light sources in the studio. Total of 36 hours lecture and 72 hours laboratory.
