Senator Martin was appointed to the Senate in 2009. She was first appointed as Deputy Whip of the Government in 2011; then as Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate in 2013. Following the October 2015 federal election, she was acclaimed Deputy Leader of the Official Opposition.
