The MSS. for the first five Parishes were sent to press as long ago as ist July, 1910, by the late Mr. W. P. W. Phillimore, and at his death on 9th April, 1913, it was found that the \'olume was printed off as far as page 96 but that there was not sufficient MS. in hand to complete it. Some time elapsed before the present co-editor, over- whelmed with the labour involved b}' taking over the Chief Editorship of the entire series, now comprising thirtA^ counties, could give attention to completing this volume, and the work in Berkshire has suffered through the lack of an energetic local Editor, such as have come forw^ard in most of the other counties and contributed so greatly to their success. It is hoped that now the Berkshire Series has again been set going, someone interested in the genea- logy of the County will help in this way and so enable this work to be made as useful as in other counties, in many of which the Marriages of over one hundred Parishes have been printed. It is only when the Marriages of a large co-extensive area have been made available that the many advantages of this method of dealing with the Register can be fully realised. -^ '^^^OQ^.f^ The thanks of the Subscribers are due both to the Transcribers who have provided the abstracts, and to the Incumbents who have allowed them to be printed. The names of both are mentioned under the respective parishes. The chief contractions used in these abstracts are " w." for " widow," or " widower," " p." for " of the parish of " and " lie." for " married b}^ Hcence." In all cases where the marriage is stated to have taken place b}^ licence, that fact is recorded, as the searcher thereb)^ knows that further information as to the age, parentage and vocation of the parties is probably recover- able from the Allegations in the Archdeaconry or other office from which the licence issued. It should be remembered that previous to 1752 the year was calculated as beginning on the 25th of March, instead of the 1st of January, so that a marriage taking place on say 20th February, 1625, would be on that date in 1626, according to our reckoning ; but as the civil and ecclesias- tical year were both used, this is sometimes expressed by 20th Feb., 162 1 After 1753 it is to be assumed that all parties not other- wise described are stated to be of the home parish, and bachelor and spinster respectiveh\ It might be well to remind the reader that these printed abstracts of the Registers are not legal " evidence." Note. —Volume I. is parchment, containing- Baptisms, Marria.ges, and Burials. The inside of front cover is illegible. The first five pages have been torn out. Commences 1558 ; ends 1687. The extracts made from this Volume were examined and collated by the Rev. F. J. Williams, of Burghclere, 2 Sept., 1909, and various corrections, additions, etc., were made under his guidance, e.g., —Found on a piece of a torn out page, 4 marriages, evidently 1559—John Woodley and de Danryge, of North Morton Thomas Fortie and Elizabeth Rawle. Richarde Weston and Johan Allen» 1560, i8th May, Richarde Blake (remainder of page torn), Dorothe Allyn. No year to next page, but evidently 1561. Volume II. —"A Regester Book for the Parish of Harwell, in the County of Berks. Steven Keate, 1 ^, , \ Churchwardens, 1700.^ John Smart. .1 This booke was bought by Richard Corderoy of Anthony Peisly, of Oxford, by order of the Minister and the Churchwardens, and Steven Keate paid for the booke Twenty-eight Shillings." " A true and exact Register of Christnings, Marriages and Burial* within the parish of Harwell, in the County of Berks, from the 28th day of March, 1687." This book is parchment, containing Baptisms and Burials, com- mencing 1688, ending 181 2 ; Marriages ending 1763. Volume III. —the usual copy of printed forms — contains Banns of Marriages and Marriages from 1754 to 1812. The entries, 1754 to 1763, have been compared with the duplicates in Vol. II. Volume IV. — 18 3 to 1837—is a similar book of 98 pages, with 1 294 printed forms, of which only 108 have been used. The extracts have been made by the Rev. H.
