Imaginative Learning Journey Blue Abyss TOPIC OVERVIEW Blue Abyss and Local Area Study Investigate local rivers and waterways! How has their use changed over time? Have you considered the effects of pollution on U.K. rivers and waterways, and the seas and oceans of the world? Grab your wetsuit! We’re going deep into an underwater world of incredible coral and mysterious sea creatures. Head to your local aquarium and learn about life in the ocean. Can you pick a favourite fish, plant or animal? What do real divers get up to below the surface? Create a fishy story about exploring an amazing underwater world. Time to go a little deeper into our seas. Make a model deep-sea submarine that can withstand great pressure and travel to the deepest, darkest places on Earth. Make sure you test it first! What are those bright lights in the sea? It’s a group of bioluminescent sea creatures! Look closely and create a colourful, 3-D art exhibition when you rise to the surface. Flippers on? Snorkels ready? They will discover how and why they were built and how they have changed over time. They will also look at buildings around their local area and describe how their uses have changed over time, and the reasons for these changes. Whilst walking along the canal from Crooke Hall to Wigan town centre the children will look for evidence on buildings to show their age. Find out why the 1872 royal navy ship, HMS Challenger is so important to modern oceanography. GEOGRAPHY: They will use map skills, locate and name the main U.K. rivers. Locate and name the main rivers, seas and oceans of the world, using maps, globes, aerial images and atlases. Follow with interest current affairs around the world to raise Global Awareness, whilst encouraging children to make the links between their learning and the real world. Locate the Great Barrier Reef on the globe and use maps and satellite images and make a sketch map, identifying significant features, towns, islands and different reefs. Look at the effects human activity has had on the reefs, including tourism, fishing and pollution. Investigate how the sea can be used as a source of energy. Look at arguments for and against. “Bringing Out The Best in Everyone” PHYSICAL EDUCATION: Sports Hall Athletics: Take part in a range of track and field events; running, hurdles, chest push, javelin, long jump, five strides and speed bounce in preparation for the sports hall athletics team event. Yoga: Static balance seated and standing using core strength and stability, learning to support own body weight in a range of positions, poses and stretches. Learn to persevere and maintain good stability and posture to increase core strength. Real Gymnastics: Supported partner work using supported balance and counter balance through a range of positions, maintaining good body position and a four point balance variation. Using a range of hand apparatus, learn to travel, throw and catch whilst maintaining correct posture and balance during flight. RE: What do creation stories teach us about caring for the world? MUSIC: String Instruments SPANISH: Yo Aprendo Espanol – The children will learn to identify Spain on a map, highlight famous Spanish cities, talk about other countries where Spanish is spoken, say their name and how they are feeling in Spanish, count to 10 in Spanish and learn 10 colours.
