Band Instrument Sanitation Guidelines

Band Instrument Sanitation Guidelines Marching Percussion Instruments (Snares, Tenors, Basses) ● Instruments are all school owned but individually assigned to students. Students use their own individually purchased sticks. Instruments are sanitized with Clorox Wipes once per week under regular conditions. Under social distancing protocols, instruments will be wiped down daily before being packed up. ● Individual student sticks/mallets are labeled with individual student names, and are maintained by those students. (Cymbals) ● Cymbals are school-owned but individually assigned to students. The straps are sanitized weekly under regular conditions. Under social distancing protocols, the straps will be sanitized daily at the end of practice. Concert Percussion Instruments (Drums, Mallets, Auxiliary instruments - tambourine, triangle, etc) ● All instruments are school owned and remain in the school at all times. These instruments are normally sanitized as needed, but will be sanitized after each use under social distancing protocols. Brass (Tuba, Sousaphone, Euphonium, Baritone, Trombone, French Horn, Mellophone, Trumpet, Cornet) ● These instruments that are school owned are given professional chemical cleanings over the summer in each year that they were used. ● Instruments are assigned to individual students and are not played or handled by any other students. ● Students are responsible for providing their own mouthpieces and keeping their instruments clean and functional. ● These instruments are given a soap and water cleaning over the Holiday break. ● Specialized social distancing protocols are not required for these instruments because they are assigned and handled by only one student between professional chemical cleanings. Woodwind (Saxophone {all types}, Clarinets {all types}, oboe, English horn, Bassoon) ● Instruments are assigned to individual students. Exterior of the instrument can be wiped down with clorox wipes. ● Students are required to provide their own swab for cleaning the inside of the instrument. Silk and cloth swaps can be washed in a standard washing machine with laundry detergent as needed. ● Students are required to provide their own reeds and reed holders that can not be used by anyone else. ● Reeds can be sterilized when necessary with sterisol germicide solution as needed (Flute, Piccolo) ● Instruments are assigned to individual students. Exterior of the instrument can be wiped down with clorox wipes. ● Students are required to provide their own swab for cleaning the inside of the instrument. Silk and cloth swaps can be washed in a standard washing machine with laundry detergent as needed. .
