2018 Shopping Guide

ISSUE No.6 2018 Kirkbymoorside Town and DirectoryH Shopping Guide A street-by-street guide to the goods and services available in this friendly town Photograph by David Ireland Local shops Use them... or lose them! Published by Kirkbymoorside Environment Group Shopping in Kirkbymoorside Town At first glance there don’t seem to be many shops in Kirkbymoorside, but there are actually about forty. Together with the market on Wednesdays they cover most everyday needs. The proprietors, whose names we have listed, are usually open to suggestions and are pleased to try to get particular items that you may need. Although only a few do home deliveries, almost all have said that in an emergency, or in a special case of illness or disability, they would be willing to help out. Talking to shopkeepers is one of the main pleasures of local shopping. Their experience, either local or from their previous varied and interesting lives, can be both valuable and interesting. Some of our shops do most unexpected things: the chemist is licensed and supplies excellent wine; the butcher is a fund of local knowledge and can tell you what time the next bus is. There are very few towns left in the UK which can offer so much. • The Guide is much more than just a list of shops. The indexing, which is pretty exhaustive, makes it easy to find which shops sell what – for example all the places where you can find a new umbrella, or a hand-painted coffin.. • The Guide is leapt upon with enthusiasm by both residents and visitors. It’s quite difficult to keep up with replenishing the stock at the Post Office or Summit Bakery. • Newcomers to Kirkbymoorside are always grateful for a copy, as it also lists all the clubs, organisations and so forth – an amazing number for such a small town. • This paper copy really is quicker than looking things up on your mobile phone! Greenstuff In this edition we are highlighting what shops are doing to help the environment. Shopping is one of the areas of life where there is more plastic involved than many of us would like. The Environment Group is trying to make a difference. Some actions are easy: Take a shopping bag with you and turn down offers of plastic bags. Take a re-useable plastic box to buy fish or meat. Go to shops where you can take your own containers to fill and refill. Value the plastic that you cannot avoid, and reuse it often. Look for plastic-free alternatives for everyday items. This is less easy, but some things, such as tooth brushes, washing-up brushes etc do not have to be plastic. All this requires us to be slightly more organised than in the past - but it soon becomes a habit to keep a basket/ cloth bag in the car. See how little plastic you have to throw away at the end of each week. Of course, with plastic there is no 'away', it’s here for ever. Moors Gateway Rotary The change of name to ‘Moors Gateway Rotary’ is to reflect its relevance to Kirkbymoorside, and its involvement in the town and surrounding area. Our motto is ‘Service before Self’ and Rotary has been instrumental in raising millions of pounds to support charities throughout the world. Locally Rotary has supported the annual 10K Run and the Christmas Market. Prospective new members are always welcome at one on our informal evening meetings, which are held on the first, second, fourth (fifth) Mondays of the month in the Kirkbymoorside Library, from 6.30 pm.
