UMBRELLA - Scheme Summary The aim of the Umbrella scheme is to create an Open Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) research and development testbed by joining key research and economic growth locations across South Gloucestershire. This first phase will connect Bristol and Bath Science Park (BBSP), the National Composites Centre (NCC)and the Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) at Emersons Green with the University of the West of England at Frenchay, including the Bristol Robotics Labs (BRL) and FutureSpace. The testbed will allow globally-significant pioneers in digital technology to think through innovations and test new applications, processes, products, services and business models to ascertain their usefulness and viability before taking them to market. The testbed will be accessible to Local Authorities & academia, creating a bridge between lab development and commercial deployment. Commercial success of new information and communications technology is predicated on the realisation of products with ‘real solutions’ that deliver ‘value to people’. De-risking products & services is impossible without access to such testbeds where capabilities link to real people – in their business, in their homes and in public areas, exploring new business models. A network of physical objects, systems, platforms and applications that contain embedded technology to communicate and share intelligence with each other, the external environment and with people. The adoption of the IIoT is being enabled by the improved availability and affordability of sensors, processors and other technologies that have helped facilitate capture of and access to real- Toshiba Research Europe Limited, Bristol are supporting South Gloucestershire Council to design and build the testbed. They have been conducting pioneering wireless communications technology research and standardisation through various research and development efforts over the last two decades, including IoT research covering smart grid, smart home, smart water networks and healthcare projects and are experts on building wireless networks. The total cost of the project is £6.797m with £3.685m coming from the Local Growth Fund and £3.112m Toshiba Research Europe Limited. The establishment of the Umbrella network is expected to create 252 net additional jobs within the West of England LEP area and generate an additional £14.45m GVA.
