See those little kittens run , run, run! (run fingers up arm) (let fingers run) Soft Kitty One Cat Soft kitty, warm kitty One cat napping in the sun. Little ball of fur Two cats playing pounce and run. Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, Three cats eating from one dish. Purr, purr, purr Four cats fishing for a fish. Five cats prancing on a fence, Little Kittens Six cats peeking under paper tents. Five little kittens Seven cats blinking crossed blue eyes, (hand made into a fist) Eight cats chasing butterflies, All black and white Nine cats cuddled tail to head, Sleeping very soundly Ten cats bouncing on my bed. All through the night. Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow. (each finger raised in turn to "Meow") Things to do together • Sing the song “Hey Diddle Diddle” together. Or listen and sing to a CD of nursery rhymes. Singing really helps develop phonological awareness which is an early literacy skill children need in order to be ready to read. • Talk about the sounds that cats and kittens make. • Cut out lots of pictures of cats from magazines, or the internet. Encourage your child to sort the cats into size, or color, or length of fur etc. • Make a list together of all the cats that you know and who owns them • Together, find as many words as you can that rhyme with cat. Write them down, or make a drawing of all the items and label them. • Together, make up a story about a cat who sneaks out of the house one day. .
