THE SIKH STORY OF BHAI GHANAYA. UNIT 2: LESSON 4 BAI GHANAYA • THIS STORY COMES FROM THE SIKH RELIGION. • THE FOLLOWING SLIDES WILL SHOW A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF SIKHISM. What Sikhs Believe. Sikhs believe that there is only one God. They only worship and pray to the one God. They believe that different religions are all paths to the same God. All humans are children of the same God. Everyone is equal in God’s eyes everyone should be treated equally. Sikhs believe that they should be part of a fellowship, worship, eat and serve together. Sikhs, out a sign of respect and symbolism wear 5 articles of clothing. These are known as the five Ks. Being baptised is the sign of being spiritually reborn. This is a key ceremony for Sikhs. THE 5 KS Sikhs believe they should follow the four commands 1. Do not dishonour the creator’s intention by cutting your hair. 2. Do not harm the body with tobacco or other intoxicants. 3. Do not eat sacrificial meat. 4. Do not commit adultery. GURU NANAK • GURU NANAK IS THE FOUNDER OF SIKHISM. GURU MEANS ‘TEACHER’. • SIKHISM IS STILL BASED ON HIS TEACHINGS AND THOSE OF THE NINE SIKH GURUS WHO FOLLOWED HIM. GURU GOBIND SINGH • GURU GOBIND SINGH WAS THE LAST OF THE TEN SIKH GURUS. • THIS STORY HAPPENED DURING HIS LIFE. • FOR SIKHS IT IS A TRUE STORY. • DURING A BATTLE SOME SIKHS CAME TO GURU GOVIND SINGH, THEIR LEADER, WITH A COMPLAINT. • “A WATER-CARRIER NAMED GHANAIYA IS GIVING WATER TO THE ENEMY SOLDIERS. HE’S HELPING THEM AND HE SHOULD JUST BE HELPING US!” THE STORY OF BHAI GHANAIYA. • GURU GOBIND SINGH CALLED GHANAYA TO APPEAR BEFORE HIM AND ASKED HIM IF THAT WAS TRUE. • GHANAIYA REPLIED, “NO, ITS NOT TRUE. I HAVE BEEN GOING ROUND THE BATTLEFIELD GIVING WATER TO EVERY PERSON WHO LOOKS LIKE YOU, GURU, AND TO ME, EVERYONE LOOKS LIKE YOU.” • WHAT DO YOU THINK HE MEANT BY THIS? DID EVERY SOLDIER ON THE BATTLEFIELD HAVE THE SAME FACE AS THE GURU? HE CONTINUED, “I SEE THE GURU IN EVERY PERSON.” • GURU GOBIND SINGH REALISED THAT WHEN GHANAIYA SAW INJURED SOLDIERS ON THE BATTLEFIELD HE DID NOT SEE SIKHS OR NON-SIKHS, HE SAW THE GURU IN EVERY MAN. • THE GURU GAVE HIM MEDICINES AND BANDAGES AND SENT HIM BACK ONTO THE BATTLEFIELD TO GIVE THE INJURED AID IN ADDITION TO WATER. • GURU GOBIND SINGH ALSO SAID THAT FROM THEN ON GHANAIYA WOULD HAVE THE TITLE ‘BHAI’ SO THAT EVERYONE WOULD KNOW THAT HE WAS DOING A NOBLE THING, NOT A BAD ONE. LESSONS FROM THE STORY… DISCUSS THESE QUESTIONS IN PAIRS/SMALL GROUPS, THEN AS A CLASS. • WHAT DOES THE STORY TEACH SIKH PEOPLE? • WHY DID GHANAIYA CARE? • DOES IT HAVE A LESSON FOR US AS WELL? • ARE THERE SIMILARITIES WITH THE CHRISTIAN AND MUSLIM STORIES WE LOOKED AT EARLIER? NOW YOU HAVE DISCUSSED THEM, ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS NEATLY IN YOUR R.E. BOOK. • WHAT DOES THE STORY TEACH SIKH PEOPLE? • WHY DID GHANAIYA CARE? • DOES IT HAVE A LESSON FOR US AS WELL? • ARE THERE SIMILARITIES WITH THE CHRISTIAN AND MUSLIM STORIES WE LOOKED AT EARLIER?.
