At the end of September, volunteers from the national organisation, the Waterways Inside this issue: Recovery Group supported by local volunteers spent a weekend at Moira carrying out essential maintenance. The Ashby Canal Trust provided 6 tons of sand and 40 bags pf cement. This was to be mixed and filled into sandbags to provide bank Ashby Canal Update 1 protection. The gang worked hard all Saturday, ending up with all 6 tons of sand and 32 bags of cement being used in 350 sandbags, all being taken down the canal to repair eroded canal banks. On Sunday they all set to to clear the banks between the Furnace and the lock, where a 'hedge' up to 10ft high had appeared , seemingly Measham’s Tower Of 1 overnight. No sign of it now though!. The proceeds raised from this pro1ect will go towards the purchase of a de2brillator and a de2brillator training kit for the First 3esponders of Measham, who respond to life saving emergencies on call out from East Midlands mbulance Service5 they currently have .4 volunteers in the local scheme. De2brillator is a life saving piece of e7uipment for use following cardiac arrest, and the purchase of another one will mean that they will have four shared between the .4 responders. The Competition is a hand made Christmas decoration and hostesses are Gwyneth Wickes and Pam Allen. Organisers invite you to come along and see how your WI is run. Measham Townswomen’s Guild The Guild meet every second Monday of the month at Measham Village Hall with meetings commencing at 7.00pm. The next scheduled meeting is Monday 14 th November when Audrey Hall presents a ‘Christmas Miscellany’. The Guild invite you to come along as a guest for just 20p and join in the friendship and fun of their organisation. NB: The above will be holding their Christmas Coffee Morning in St Laurence Church Hall on Saturday 23 rd November between 10.00am – 12.00pm. There will be a cake stall, Christmas gift stall, book stall and lots more. St Laurence Church – Christmas Bazaar The above annual event will take place on Saturday 30 th November between 10.00am – 1.00pm. Stalls include cake, toy and Christmas wreath. There will be lunches and snacks available. Measham Leisure Centre: - Junior Boxercise The above runs every Wednesday with Chris Mawbey between 4.30pm – 5.30pm . The age range catered for is 8 – 15 years and cost is £2.70 per person or half price with loyalty points . No booking required , just turn up. Street Dance This is for the 5 – 15 year old age range and takes place on Mondays with Becki between 4.30pm – 5.30pm. Again cost is £2.70 per person but half price with loyalty points. Tai -chi Class This class is every Wednesday between 6.30pm – 7.30pm . Cost is £5.00 each or £3.80 under the Leisure Scheme. Just turn up! Adult Table Tennis Club This Drop In Club runs every Wednesday between 7.00pm – 8.00pm and is for 16+ . Cost to play is £2.00 and no pre booking required. Trampoline Coaching Trampoline coaching takes place every Monday between 4.30pm – 5.30pm and is for the 5 – 12 year old age range. Appleby Magna Film Society The third film of the above’s season will show on the 8th November at Appleby Church Hall and is entitled ‘Untouchable’ . The film based on a true story tells the story of a rich quadriplegic living in a mansion in Paris requiring a live in carer. A young offender turns up for the interview, not really looking to get the vacancy but to his surprise is hired. The two men go on to develop a surprising friendship. Showings are 2.30pm and 8.00pm. (Continued on page 6) Page 6 MEASHAM MESSENGER (Continued from page 5) Firework Displays: - Conkers Fireworks Spectacular This event organised by Ashby Rotary Club raising money for community projects takes place on Saturday 2 nd November. Along with the firework display there are rides and amusements for children, hot dogs and other fast food and for adults the beer tent. Sparklers will be on sale in designated areas. Doors open at 5.00pm and the children’s display will commence at 6.30pm followed by the main display at 7.30pm. Cost is £5.50 in advance and £6.50 on the night for Adults and children pay £3.50 on the night but just £3.00 in advance. Book online or call 01283 216633. Snibston Fireworks: - The annual firework extravaganza at the Snibston Discovery Park in Coalville takes place on Saturday 2 nd November between 5.30pm – 9.00pm. There will be a choreographed Fireworks Spectacular before the lighting of the bonfire. Tickets are £7.00 on the gate (£5.00 in advance) with the under 3’s FREE . Monies raised will go towards supporting local people in their time of need by providing palliative care.
